    Wireless will this work ?

Hi all i have a cousin who at long last has decided to get on the Internet, his desktop PC is about 6years old running XP Home. One of the problems is that he lives in a 3 story house the wireless router will be on the Ground floor, looking at this package http://www.productsandservices.bt.co...erview_BB_home
But the PC is not wireless enabled so was thinking of using one of the following products http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/sto...ory_oid=-28363
    or http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/sto...ory_oid=-28363
which one of the USB wireless adaptors would be the best to get ?? any idea is the Belkin Wireless N USB N300 USB wireless adaptor backward compable with 54g routers??. Any addvice would be appreciated thanks in advance Cheer's.

I was in the same position as your cousin marko, I to am on the 3rd floor of my house. Try this I'm getting signal strength of good to very good and speeds of 65mbps to 72mbps. I was unsure if the signal would reach but it works a treat!!!

Powerline/homeplugs are best (especially if you live in a older house with thick walls etc)

But is the signal source and the target more or less directly above/below each other (no matter how many floors up/down) and without any walls in the way? thin floorboard floors/plaster ceilings are somewhat more wifi friendly that 1 foot thick solid brick walls i have found

My room is there floors up and to the left of where the router is. And for me to be three floors up there must be walls in the way!! (ok not brick walls but they are less friendly than some modern houses. Anyway, i'm not here to argue about wifi or homeplugs, but just to say that wifi can work in big/old houses. Plus in my case homeplugs were too expensive (I would have needed 5 of them)

Sure. Im not here to argue either, just saying that if the op did have solid brick walls (which you said you dont have) between his signal and receiver it would degrade his signal, and so thought it prudent to advise.

I do have 1 foot thick brick walls between 2 rooms and it does really degrade my signal (by nearly 60-70%) straight through them. But going up through floor, ceiling to upstairs i only lose like (10-15%)

But yeah, have to agree, having multiple devices homeplugs do get expensive

Re: Wireless will this work ?

I live in a large house (3 cottages all knocked into 1 house).
My router is downstairs at the line entry and my main PC is the opposite end of the house (upsatirs).

The direct line of the signal passes through two 5feet thick walk through fire places and i still get a good signal.

    I wouldnt worry.

I was goign down the homepug rote until it proved so expensive!

Have had a look at the walls in the house and like yours there about 1 foot thick. Yet my signal is very good! Maybe the signal is on a diagonal angel and so misses most of the walls. I dunno lol But I can tell you this when I do buy a house I will have an access point in my bedroom!!!
