Can anyone help with Vigin Media Wireless Question please???

Hi all, I was hoping that someone might be able to help out with a really dumb problem! I am quite good at basic computer stuff, but need some advice about wireless!
I have a desktop PC which has wired broadband from Virgin Media. Someine has just bought me a WiFi laptop, and I thought that I could just buy a router, and use the laptop when my partner was on the internet on the desktop. I am now a bit confused.
Is there any way that someone could just briefly explain what I would need to do to be able to access the net on both PC and Laptop at the same time, as we often fight about whose turn it is !!!??
He is worried that by getting wireless, he would lose his desktop connectivity?
All of your help is very much appreciated

Will not be a problem, most wireless routers, provide wireless as well fixed/wired connections, you should be able to use both wireless and your wired pc at same time. We do

We use the WRT54GL - this pic shows a overview of how it connects to all the following.....

As Barrichello says just get a wireless router! You can then choose to use the wireless signal or be connected by a wire to the router. I would go for a Belkin router (will may disagree) but so far I have had no major problems!!! If you want a wide range go for the Belkin wireless N router F5Z0083UK. You can also buy one with an adapter if your laptop wireless card is not great (thats mainly applies to old laptops cards)

Make sure its the cable version you buy!! i.e it is just the router and not a modem and router!!

    Good luck!

Hi-Thanks for that-the laptop is a Dell Latitude 110L, and I don't think it's particularly old-is it better to get wireless N than G?? I understand that its a better router? Is it faster, or does it give more range? Just curious-also how much should I be looking to pay? The laptop was a gift, and we don't have a lot of spare cash, which is why I want it working so I can sell some stuff while my partner works!!
    Thanks for your replys

If the laptop has a g card then it should be fine! I would go for a wireless N router like the one I have here If thats too much to pay then maybe this That g router should do the job just as well and speed should be fine for web browsing etc.. Or even cheaper here.

There are other router only reason I recommend belkin is their tech support is first rate!!!

Make sure the router you buy is compatible with cable internet connections rather than the standard Bt ones.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

The routers I have linked to are both for cable modems, so he should be ok! But yes if you go to a store double check there not selling you the wrong one!
