Question Anyone use O2 home broadband?

I'm seriously considering changing my ISP especially now that Orange have upped the price to £24.95 so that I can pay for them to increase their coverage!

As I am an O2 customer I can get O2 home broadband a bit cheaper, I haven't looked at any other providers but wondered if O2 was any good as its got 4 stars on the ThinkBroadband website.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Also I found a thread about using a Netgear (I think) router on O2, I have a LinkSys wireless router that I'd like to use, will that be as easy to set up as it was for Orange?

I've been on O2 for 6months now and before that BE Broadband (Same company). They have been superb. I get an around 11mb connection and I'm using the my netgear router for that.

I have O2 boardband moved from BT tbh I am happy with the service and the speed is the same as BT due to my distance from the exchange but I have had a lot of drop outs on O2 service which I didnt get on BT they seem to be getting more frequent and its not just me the drop outs tend to happen at the same time as other O2 users I know.

That probably down to ADSL2+ technologies. It's alot more picky than ADSL technology. If you are getting the same speeds as before, then I would asked to be moved to ADSL Annex (or something like that). You shouldn't get any drop outs then.

My terminology probably isn't correct, but if you shout at them slowly over the phone, I'm sure they'll understand eventually

Re: Anyone use O2 home broadband?

Get a decent 3Mb speed considering my distance from the exchange. Their service is generally consistant, but i do get the occasional drop-out like Paul, maybe once an evening.

It's not due to wireless, the PC is always connected to the router, it's the router > internet side of things. Takes about 1 minute to reconnect usually.

Only bad point is their modems, the port forwarding doesn't work AT ALL from my experience with either Be or O2...make sure you get yourself a 3rd party router - Linksys, netgear or the like.

    Edit

Paul, try ringing tech support line and asking them to turn down the line attenuation (think that's what the call it). It's a value in decibels (db) and turning mine down to 9db helped stabilise my line significantly. Speed went from about 3-4Mbits/sec (unstable) to 2.5-3.5MbMbits/sec (95% stabile)

Re: Anyone use O2 home broadband?

    Paul,

Flip the router over and leave it that way for a while.

Watch your drop-outs stop or become less frequent.

I think it's down to overheating as the vents are under the router and not on the top of the router. Even 8 year old children know that heat rises... shame the routers designers don't

You'll be suprised how many people I know on O2 have had their drop-outs fixed by this simple fix

+1 lol this is so true.

I've had my BeBox on it's side - so both topside and bottomside are exposed to air - ever since I got it. It does work

Used O2 for 6 months since switching from SKY.

Excellent service, 14mb constant and cheapest by far.

Re: Anyone use O2 home broadband?

A friend of mine uses them and has nothing but praise for the service and speed. The latter may have something to do with their practically living on top of the local BT exchange but the former can make the experience better for people living further away.

Me, I'm using Virgin on cable because realistically there's no way I'm getting a decent speed on ADSL 5 miles out from the exchange....

    What speed are you getting?

If its under 8Mbps then ask if your connection can be switched to normal ADSL rather than ADSL2+, you might even sync a little higher since the attenuation is reduced (max speed is 8Mbps though)

As mentioned put the O2 box on its side, I did that with my Bebox and I stand up my Netgear too, better cooling that way by convection.

Re: Anyone use O2 home broadband?

Thanks for the replies, I'm getting 6.9MBS from Orange and when I entered my phone number on the O2 site it said I could get up to 8MBS so presumably I'd still be able to get the same kind of speed?
