    Phone Cable for ADSL (RJ11)

I've just run a 10m phone cable for my SkyHD box, as the phone line is stupidly miles away from where I want my modem to be.

This 10m cable I've ran only makes use of the Blue/White & White/Blue cables.

Will this cable be sufficient for connecting my ADSL modem to? If so I'd just leave my SkyHD disconnected and it would save me having to run another cable!

Or, does an ADSL line require all 4 wires to be connected?

Having looked into it more, the cable gets a dial tone so it should be sufficient.

    Cheers Gonzo!

yes you do only need the Blue/White & White/Blue cores/wires. you used to use 4 cores as the other pair was used for the ring only. New phones dont need this now as they pick a signal up and ring.
I've wired loads up with just Blue/White & White/Blue and ADSL and phones have worked fine.

Watch out for your connection rates though. Over a distance of 30 feet quite a lot of the phone cables out there will give you noticeably worse performance than connecting it directly to the BT socket. At least that's what I noticed on my ADSL 2 line. Had to give in and buy some more expensive sheilded cables to get good performance if the run was more than 10ft

maybe worth trying some cat5/6 shielded cable. I would think standard cat5 would be better than phone cable. depends on what you can lay your hands on easyier. I use cat5 std for voice / data and cctv.

Yep, cat 5/6 would work nicely (far better than standard telephone cables) if you have some cable and a tool that'll properly attach an end plug

I bought an extension cable from ADSL Nation and, despite being supposedly rated for ADSL 2, it gave crappy performance. So I got an expensive one from Maplin and it works fine.. no loss in connection speed. But definitely the best way to go, in terms of cost Vs quality, is to make your own cables from Cat 5/6 cable

Re: Phone Cable for ADSL (RJ11)

At the time of writing this the problem I was having was down to the Sky Engineer bodging it. I rewired the connectors and now it's working.

My activation date is 29/09 so I'll see what the speeds are like (not expecting much anyway) and then maybe knock up a Shielded cable to see if speeds differ.

I'd rather use the telephone cable that I've run now as it's small, white and discreet. Bit easier to cable clip to the wall than fugly cat6.

You don't need to use cat6 - cat5 would be fine.

I'd pick Cat5e over Cat5, not really expensive either.
