    Wireless N Or Homeplug? Help!!!

    hey guys,
I've had my current linksys WRT54GS for about 3 years now and it's served its purpose well. However over the last couple of months its been randomly resetting my wireless connection so I can't get on the network and therefore no internet. It happened again yesterday and after an hour of powering it on and off and playing around with various settings it still wouldn't give me internet access. Now I've been thinking in investing in homeplug because depending on my houses wiring it should be faster and more secure then wireless. But now that it seems my router is losing its mind I may need a new one and so I'm now wondering about wireless n. Either solution has to be fast enough to stream dvds from my htpc (which my current setup struggles to do) but that is the most demanding thing it would need to do. So does anyone have any suggestions about what I should get because I haven't really kept up with the wireless n/homeplug scene so I'm at a bit of a loss. Oh and I know wired would be the best solution but except for homeplug my main rig isn't in a position to be wired, unfortunately.
    Anyways, suggestions please
    Thanks.

Not really in my experience, but I know plenty of people to shower curses when trying to get wireless streaming to work with anywhere near the quality and relaibility of wired.
So I'd go homeplug, I guess. It would depend on your house wiring. How old is it ?

Old. Lol. I can always buy it and if it doesn't work then return it but I was just thinking if I need a new router which would be wireless n then maybe I should go for wireless n. But as I said I don't really know about this technology so just need some advice.

Re: Wireless N Or Homeplug? Help!!!

Technically I could with alot of cable but unfortunately my parents aren't going to let me as it would have to go under the carpet etc... I did ask if I could drill a hole through the ceiling instead but apparently thats not a sensible request

If you're going to get a new router anyway, why not try it with that, and if it doesn't work....get some homeplugs ?

Re: Wireless N Or Homeplug? Help!!!

If the electrical wiring in your house is good, then I would recommend homeplugs. I use a couple of 85mbps to network everything in my house, and I can stream 720p stuff with relative ease.

Re: Wireless N Or Homeplug? Help!!!

Hmmm... Looks like I'll have to shell out the cash for the homeplugs and hope the wiring in my house is ok. Guess I could always returns them if they no good. Anyone know any good tools to measure the speed, just would be nice to see the difference between my current wireless and the homeplugs.

Re: Wireless N Or Homeplug? Help!!!

in my experience, if the sharing server is on cable connection to the router than the wireless streaming has no issues. I've got an apple extreme connected wired to my windows server and i have no problems streaming. but if i do wireless on both ends i see some lag ever so often. fresh restarts usually make things better

Re: Wireless N Or Homeplug? Help!!!

I have a Linksys WRT54G (v2, also old!) and about a year ago I got a pair of Billion Homeplug adapters so that I could move my main PC and Windows Home Server into different rooms.

The homeplug works great, no problems at all. But it's still nice to have wireless in the house, so I'd say replace your router first.

3rd option? If you have one of the older linux-based 54GS's, you could see if you can install a custom firmware on your WRT54GS and see if you can get it back up and running (assuming it's not an aging hardware-type fault!) e.g. DD-WRT, Sveasoft, X-WRT.

Re: Wireless N Or Homeplug? Help!!!

I live in a relatively old building using Netgear's 200Mbps homeplug solution and to be honest it isn't that impressive. Its likely due to the wiring in the building but even after disabling notching and shortening the password to slightly increase bandwidth things aren't fantastic. It also adds around 5ms to my latency. Regarding wifi, this is an interesting one. Generally wifi works fine, however due to the huge number of other families living in the vicinity there are a large number of wifi networks and therefore plenty of interference.

I'd really recommend ethernet over anything else.

Re: Wireless N Or Homeplug? Help!!!

There is no way of knowing unless you try them out. For me I get about 1M per second from some 85mpbs homeplugs, but the wiring is old. However that is subject to the hoover, switch that badboy on and you'll be lucky to get 20k/s.

Wireless is similar, about 500k/s unless the microwave is on, then it just mongs.

Re: Wireless N Or Homeplug? Help!!!

Thanks for the advice so far and after a bit more thought I figure since it seems a new router is in order I might as well got the for the wireless n since the wiring in my house is rather old so at least I know n can't be slower then what I currently have. So now I just need help finding a decent router/adapter combo for wireless n. I would prefer a linksys as this is what I've had before and its been rock solid but as I've said before I don't know what's currently good or bad so hopefully you guys can suggest some setups.
