    O2 Home Broadband Access?

What is it like to use as i know that their LLU connections are very good but i can't get those at the moment

I've read that they get overloaded and very slow (even though the bt ones, whoch they run on are fine) so i thought i'd better get some ideas on it before i move.

Can you post the samknows link for your exchange so we can suggest the best option?

    Re: O2 Home Broadband Access?

I left O2 Access at the start of the year, but have continued to read on other forums that the Access service is dire at peak times, e.g. after 5pm weekdays and weekends. I don't think it matters where you are in the country.

You knew when peak times arrived as latency shot up and download speeds dropped to around 0.5 Mb/s even though I was synced at 8128kbps. Online gaming was not an option, and web browsing was akin to 56k modem era.

I’m glad I jumped ship without penalty instead of holding out for an improvement in service.

    Bane.

I've been on o2/be for years now and I've not had any of the above issues. I believe there were some exchanges that were having problems, but they put extra kit in those a couple of months back.

It sounds like though that your on a Llu exchange whilst o2 home access isn't for those exchanges

    Re: O2 Home Broadband Access?

Home Access sucks donkey balls. Low pings after 12am and before ~8am every single day other times they're 100ms over the norm.

The fixes they said they'd applied worked for a week, maybe two, then it was back to normal.

Nothing else in my area comes close at the price though

    Re: O2 Home Broadband Access?

Seems someone from O2 read my post!

    I got this email this morning;

We’re making some changes to help your O2 Home Broadband flow better in October ’09.

The internet is busiest between around 8pm and 11pm, when most people are at home and online. This can slow it down for everyone.

To stop that happening, we’ve introduced a traffic management policy for our Access package on O2 Home Broadband.

From now on, we’ll give first priority to those things most people want to do in the evening – like emailing, looking at websites, watching things on sites like BBC iPlayer or YouTube, or using programs like Skype or Messenger.

We’ll give lower priority to peer to peer programs and newsgroup services, find out the details. So you’ll notice them running slower when our network gets busier. We’ve done this because some people use these programs to download large files (like movies and TV shows) all day long. And that slows everything else down.

    How traffic management works

    * We’ll only do it at the busiest times (from 8pm to 11pm or whenever our network is congested).
    * You can still use any kind of program, whenever you want. But peer to peer programs and newsgroup services will run slower when our network is busy.
    * Audio and video streaming (like BBC iPlayer and YouTube) will work as normal – or even faster.
    * We won’t limit your actual connection speed – only the speed of peer to peer programs and newsgroup services.

    Regards,

    Felix Geyr
    Head of O2 Home Broadband
Sadly, I think it'll work for 2 weeks, then it'll be back to normal again.

    Re: O2 Home Broadband Access?

There were really bad speed issues at peaks times on our BT exchange.

Then they apparently made some changes, and there was a real improvement.

Now its sloth like again at peak times, this could of course be down to us rather than them, its hard to tell as I'm not at home on off peak times.
In the internets, no one can hear you sarcasm.

    Re: O2 Home Broadband Access?

    1. slow internet at peak times

    2. make improvements to service, ie. traffic shaping etc. which makes service better

    3. pile in more customers to make more money, back to (1)

Has the traffic shaping improved the non-LLU service?
