Talk Talk cold calling every night and hanging up

Every night for at least a week, I've been getting calls from 01214568789, which is apparently Talk Talk. Now, over a month ago I was looking for a new broadband provider, and probably put my number into their checker, as I did with other ISPs, so I suspect that this is where they've got my number from.

The thing is, even if you pick up the phone, they hang up. I have absolutely no intention of going with Talk Talk. I didn't intend to go with them before because they didn't offer anything that I was interested in, and I'm certainly not interested in them now.

Surely there has to be some kind of regulation to prevent companies from dialling the same number every single night, when all they're trying to do is sell me some crappy service?

It's probably in their T&Cs somewhere when you check that they have the right to call you?

My wife just told them to take our number off their records and we had no problems - bit difficult if there is no-one at the other end though!

Sounds like a wussier verson of the way they treated my granddad, which was based pretty much around the principle that if they call over and over again, even to the point of calling back immediately after he'd told them to f-off and hung up on them, he'd eventually give in and subscribe, it being the only way to make the calls stop. They really are scum of the highest order.

Anyway, there are two ways to deal with the problem. Ask the police to deal with it. Record the calls you've been getting and that no-one is on the end of the line and that you think someone is running a hate campaign against you. Maybe Talk Talk will get an asbo...

If they don't put the phone down immediately, all you need is a second or two, and a really loud whistle or fog horn...

Can the Telephone Preference service work in this situation?

It's an auto dialler.
The machine dials all of the numbers in it's list (which you apparently signed up for) until it gets an answer. When you pick up, there is a (usually small) delay while it tries to put the call through one of its sales team.

Your best recourse would be to advise them to take your number off the list, and that any further calls will be reported to TPS.
