How do I share a HDD in vista with a PC on the network?

Didn't think this would be hard... but I'm stuck.

I have a removeable SATA caddy. I have loads of files, on it and Sair needs them on her PC (whih is XP... )

I right clicked Share on the drive, and gave all permissions (read, write, edit) and while she can SEE it from her PC, she can't access it.

Before I cut and paste the whole lot into my Public file, can anyone give me a really simple fix to this pls?

(mutters under breath about XP being easy, and Vista hiding the bleeding obvious....)

I had a similar problem. It resolved itself when I looked in reverse. i.e. when I looked from the laptop to the Desktop I could see the drive but not open it. After I had logged on the desktop and opened a few files on the laptop shared folders it 'just worked' the other way round as well.
I have NFI why.

yup, passwords all off.

It's soo easy in XP.. but this has me befuddled. I have an idea that I need to create Sair a user account on my Vista PC for her to log into via her PC, but I dunno why I haver that idea... but I gave up and copied them to my Public folder.

Stupid though.. such a waste.

I had some problems with this before (when I used to run Vista - but much is true for W7) it's either password protected sharing or security settings. Later versions of windows really hate you sharing the root of drives. This is a bit rough but it shows a basic way of getting it working for Vista:

You *do not* need to create an account for every machine - it does work if setup right (i've been doing this for years between my media center and xp laptops [prior to jumping to 7]). The key is "everyone" (see guide). Understanding security for file and registry in Windows is, to be honest, hard work for most users - and hence why MS push people into using other methodologies like homegroups and public folders I guess. I think they mean well in trying to stop nasty stuff happening but..

Silly question, are you in the same "Workgroup", because one thing they did change between XP and Vista was the default group name I think from MSHOME to Workgroup

good question.

Workgroup was always the XP Pro default anyway..and that's what Sair has. And my Vista machine's the same.
It was XP Hone that defaulted differently.
