    Switch/ device advice

Well its gotten to the point at home where the router no longer has enough Ethernet ports to support all the devices.

    3 x PC
    3 x Laptops

The laptops do have wireless access although the people using them refuse to the Wireless which is annoying and means I have to spend more money to make thigns easier for them.

Now my thinking was simply to use a switch.
So cable from Straight through cable from Router to Switch, then Cross over cable from the switch to 2 laptops and a PC.

The question is, can anyone recommend a decent small, switch or indeed a possibly better device that I havent thought of?

    Cheers in advance,

    Re: Switch/ device advice

If you use a switch, there is no need to use a cross over cable - it will automatically detect the type of cable/connection and adjust accordingly.

If you only need 10/100, or if you want Gigabit:

They are unmanaged, reliable and aestetically pleasing to boot

Wiring up is simple - one lead to the back of the router, rest of the PCs plugged into this or the router

    Re: Switch/ device advice

Cheers dave, for some reason I always thought Switch to PC = Crossover.
I might user a cross over still, as I will be making the cables myself, so if I ever move stuff about or add and change things, then they can be used for other stuff.

Think I may go for the Gigabit one, just..well because.

Im ok with the wiring, but thanks .

Right now all I need is the stuff to make the cables!

Cheers again for the quick reply Dave.

Or this one - still Netgear, but a more "functional" look! Also available as Gigabit (and the one I use)

Both are available as 5 port versions.

    Not a problem.

With regard to crossover cables - my understanding was they were only used when you connected a hub to another one, without a dedicated uplink port. As hubs are effectively dumb (cannot detect the type of connection) it was required to make the thing work. Otherwise, it should be a standard cable you use, rather than a crossover.

Crossover can be used between the switch and the router if you want, but afaik, you don't need to

    Re: Switch/ device advice

I personally own a Edimax ES-5800P Gigabit Ethernet Switch 8 Ports, it does the job flawlessly its much cheaper the above mentioned ones. This is another option for you to consider if you are on a tight budget.
