What's the best option for broadband?

Hi all, I need some advice on broadband. I move into my new flat on Sunday and I could either get cable broadband with Virgin Media or ADSL (or equivalent) with o2. Either way I would need to pay for line rental whether BT landline or phone line with Virgin Media. I'd rather do without a phone line altogether but, the price difference for Virgin Media with and without a phone line is negligible.

    Anyway, any advice is welcome.

    Thanks

    Andy

What speed cable can you get at your house? If you can get 50Mbps, get that, else I recommend Be* or O2 if you're a paying O2 customer.

O2, have it and well pleased - it saturates our wireless network, and they have no issues with my excessive downloading

I could get the 50Mbps cable but it's too pricey, I'm looking to pay up to £30 including line rental for broadband. I'm not fussed about tv, but if i change my mind freeview would suffice

You could try BT (11 ppm) line rental, get the o2 package with 3 months offer and a cashback from quidco it will come down to 3 to 5 ppm, and there is another cashback from sky. As for tv, I am waiting for the Sky player for the Windows media centre to be released soon that will cost for non sky broadband customers 15ppm, for sky customers free (unlimited package) So a total of 31 ppm with the whole package

I have o2 but only because Virgin is not in my area.

i would stay away from virgin, Be* is the best you can get at the moment, good customer service (free of charge), if you live close to the bt exchange you get a good download speed, and the price is right 11pounds bt landline and 22pounds be* also if you upload a lot they offer 2.5 meg up. (use quidco to save some more)

Re: What's the best option for broadband?

I'm going the other way from Be/O2 to Virgin (cue violins!)

I used to be with Be but after checking the line distance from my new house to the exchange, I'm that far away from the exchange I'm only realistically going to get around 4-6 Mb but I've a feeling BT have played silly buggers and from speaking to neighbours they're getting around 3 Mb

As such, it looks like I'll be jumping on the 50 Mb package from Virgin when I finally move at the end of the month.

You will only see 3mb anyway with port throttling on if they didnt have traffic shaping and restrictions on 50mb i would of gone onto it now.

As when i moved house I went from 22mb to 12mb
