    Angry Broadband connection

Help! My Vergin Media Broadband (cable modem) has been working ok until recently but whilst downloading mail the connection to both mail and internet failed. We tried all the normal routines; virus scan; firewall etc. before contacting Virgin helpline, and after much messing about they said the fault was at our end and so sent an engineer out to check it over. He checked all the settings etc. and advised us to reinstall Vista, which we did but to no avail. Network adapter working ok; all settings seem ok. Any ideas please?

Escalate it it back to VM. Could be that the cable router has died.

You got a laptop or a friend with one?
The joy of cable means that you can simply plug it into their machine for testing.

If you can, plug it into the laptop, reboot the modem (unplug from wall and back in). Give it a few mins and see if you can access the net

Hi Guys, Thanks for the feedback. Cable modem has been checked by VM, ok. Tried it with a laptop and it worked ok. Tried PC again on ethernet with no joy, still comes up with 169 address.

    Re: Broadband connection

169.xxx.yyy.zzz address is the default address - which indicates the PC isn't picking up the DHCP address handed out by the ISP/cable router. Check the network settings to ensure you have "get IP address automatically" (or similar wording) selected.

Checked all settings and they appear to be correct. Tried IP config renew etc.

    Re: Broadband connection

Firewall settings? (Clutching at straws now though) You say you did a full re-install of windows? Did you reload any drivers etc for the network card?

Click start. Type services.msc and click ok. Scroll down the list and double click on DHCP client and make sure its started.

    Thanks perterb, thanks Jay,
Tried both solutions without success. It looks like a "Windows" job. ie throwing it out the windows and get a new pc!
