Slow file transfer between Vista/Windows 7

    I currently have

    Netgear 802.11g 54g Router (834)
Laptop running Vista HP 32Bit with 802.11g card
HTPC running Windows 7 HP 32Bit with Draft N usb card
Main PC running Windows 7 Professional 64Bit with 802.11g card

Connecting to the internet is fine, but I tried to stream a recorded DVB-S stream from the HTPC to my main pc but it was painfully slow, tried it to the laptop with the same result

I have tried copying to it but I get less than 200kb/s transfer speed

Is there a way to speed it up? All the wireless devices get good signal and reliable connection on a 54mbps network, would ideally like around 10mb/s as it means I can actually transfer a whole recording in less than 4 hours for a 2 hour long recording....

I tried the suggestions in the previous thread but only got 6-700kb/s instead

Is there some free software that can improve the experience?

Something is very wrong with the setup to get those speeds, do not look at software but rather the hardware setup, have you taken it back to basics and tested a wired connection to the HTPC or Laptop, if all fine there then go over the wireless setup trying different things, even drop the connection speed and chance channels to find what is causing the issue, does it impove when you are next to the router etc?

I don't think any software will help you with this one.

Re: Slow file transfer between Vista/Windows 7

Depends on how far you're from your router 802.11g will achieve up to 2.8MB/s. But since you'll be transferring both way in reality even in optimal condition you'll only get somewhere around 1.2MB/s maximum. If the signal is not that good, there is not much you can do and it could easily go down to say 400KB/s with 4 bar out of 5.

To get better speed you can either do an Ad-hoc connection (so no internet), or buy another router/ap (probably 802.11n), hook up to the old router by a short ethernet cable, and set the wireless on different channel on both. Connect the desktop to the 802.11n router and laptop to the 802.11g, that way you'll get full speed on both.

Otherwise go for homeplug or a very long ethernet cable.

Just had a thought if you can not get a great wireless connection have you thought about powerline connections?

What would the speeds from an n spec router likely to be around? The HTPC is draft n, and would then need to get adapters for the main pc and laptop, and possibly another one

Can't go homeplug, power sockets have extensions/splitters coming out as each room is limited to the number of plugs which would affect inteference

By simple ratio sync at 300Mbps will be about 6 times faster than 54Mbps. What I was suggesting is to have 2 different access points such that they don't share the same 54Mbps channel (300Mbps draft-n). You could find for example an old modem that you don't use anymore instead of buying a new one.

    Something like this:
    Laptop <-802.11g Channel 1-> Router 1 <-Wired-> Router 2 <-802.11g/n Channel 6-> HTPC
    Workstation 1: Intel i7 950 @ 3.8Ghz / X58 / 12GB DDR3-1600 / HD4870 512MB / Antec P180

Oh yes you can. I buy Comtrend Poweline plugs from eBay.

Put powerline plug into socket, plug extension into powerline plug

Re: Slow file transfer between Vista/Windows 7

Looks nice but after dropping so much on the HTPC it will need to wait a bit

Could I set one up then hook one up to a switch then feed that to my pc, laptop (and possibly 360), one to the router then buy another for the HTPC?

Re: Slow file transfer between Vista/Windows 7

Here's something to try on your Vista machine and perhaps even your Windows 7.

Go to Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Turn Windows features on and off (left hand side) -> uncheck Remote Differential Compression. Click 'Ok'. You may need to reboot.

You need 2 to start with and can add more as you need. I bought another 2 after a while but only have 3 in total linked up, the other is a spare in case I decide to plug something else in. It takes about 1 minute to set the plugs up to talk to each other although a pair should work out of the box.
