Help with connection sharing

Ive got this machine connected directly to the net and 3 other machines connected via the lan, 1 of the machines will detect this machine and get a net conenction however the other 2 will not, there sat on a different IP range starting with 169.
The 2 machines that cannot connect both have fresh installs of Win2k, the one that can connect is a old install of 2k, and this is a XP machine.
All appear to have the same settings.
Can anyone help?

how are you trying to network them ?
Are you using a router or a switching hub ?

But.. since they are all windows boxes. You should first check that they are all part of the same network. Running the network setup wizards and making sure all the computers are set to the same named network - "Ms home" by default I think. Is a basic step. Aside from that without further info. I can't recommend anything else.

What are their IP addresses? I would put them so that the first three bits are common between all of them e.g. 192.168.0.x

Also someone suggested I do the following : "Goto the command window on each machine and type "ipconfig /release" followed by "ipconfig /renew"."

When I try this I get the following message :

"All adapters bound to DHCP do not have DHCP adresses. The adresses were automaticly configured and cannot be relesed"

If I manualy set the ip adresses I still cant get a net connection on the machines, never have been able to in the past.

what about trying the network setup progam that comes with XP? When you use the network wizard on an XP machine it creates a disk that you can use to set up other machines - worth a shot...

that disc only works for windows 98 not 2k...

k.. hub. this is good. Again.. when I set things up. I often forget the really simple things to look for. So I have to ask them !! Are the little green lights on all the connections to the hub ? This means that the hardware is actually available.

There.. I said it. But i feel cheaper for it.

Have you done much googling for answers to the DHCP problem ? This is supposed to setup your ip-host-mac addresses automatically. And at the moment is the best lead to your problem. Are all the computers in the network named something unique.. i.e. 1 = apu, 2 =homer... etc... Just a thought

sorry thought as the disk worked on XP machines, it would work on 2k as well

is you 2k machine a professional version, or is it a Terminal Server, Domain server edtion? It's not trying to take over the XP machine as gateway?

Everything have the same subnet mask? Tried making everyone static IP? Can you ping any of the 2k machines from the XP or see any network shares?

All part of the same domain/workgroup? Network cards all working ok? Cables are standard and not crossovers? Try adding one machine at a time. Set your gateway as 192.168.0.1 and subnet at 255.255.255.0

Is there a firewall installed somewhere along the line?

hub works fine, when i manualy set the IP I can see the xp machine but get no net conection.

Just upgraded one of the 2k boxes to xp and on first boot it found the 192. ip range however when I tryed to set up the net connection it went back to the 169. range

Ive just tryed a 3rd party proxy software and that cant even allow connection

Sounds like the machines aren't picking up and IP address from the ICS Machine.

No firewalls on these machines?
You could try manually assigning them IP addresses - The ICS machine will allocate itself itself 192.168.0.1, so give the other machines any in the 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.254 range. They'll need subnets of 255.255.255.0 and a default gateway of 192.168.0.1.
You could set the DNS server to 192.168.0.1 or just straight out to your ISP's DNS.
