Can one use a pair of homeplugs, one connected to router and one connected to remote computer 1 and a pair of powerline adapters one connected to router and one connected to remote computer 2 or would this create problems
Not sure generally, but I know the Zyxel 660hwp router won't work with their pla-100's, and router supports 200 the latter 85. You should look at the site for the brand you're interested in to check, I found this info on their faq.
yes you can (although some brands may vary), i have a 2 different branded Homeplugs at home, all working happily together, although obvioulsy you will only get the slower rated speed if you have 2,
I have
1 x Zyxel 200mbs plugged into router
1 x Zyxel 200mbs Plugged into streamer
1 x Zyxel 200mbs Plugged in to PC (which streams)
1 x Newlink 85mps Plugged into second PC,
All working fine ..
Ah, good news Their faq said:
"The PLA-400, PLA-401 and P-660HWP will interoperate , but the PL-100 will not interoperate with them."
Perhaps the problem lies with that particular 660hwp and the adapters, or they're just getting you to upgrade
I see that plugs are now being sold that effectively have a hub built in - ie 4 ethernet sockets per plug. Has anyone tried these, or do they have compatibility issues if mixed in with the older plugs?
How well do these adaptors work when connected to gang plugs and surge protectors? All of my PCs are run from a multiway gang plug as there is only one electrical socket nearby.
You could use one like this to avoid plugging into surge protectors etc.
Are you going to be able to see it then?
Powerline adapters cause chronic radio interference and came to market via a loophole in the law. Despite many 'battles' which have appeared across forums between radio users, enthusiasts and users of PLT products, the fact remains that PLT / PLN in its current format does not comply with the essential requirements of the EMC Directive, 2004/108/EC.
Powerline adapters do not and can not comply with EN55022 for Conducted Emissions. If you currently use one of these products there is a chance that you may receive a visit from OFCOM at some point should a complaint be made about radio interference in your area. These devices can cause chronic problems and have been observed up to 1.2km from the installation.
Following a meeting this month (March 2010) at the House of Commons, attended by Adrian Sanders (MP), Clive Corrie (OFCOM), Colin Richards (RSGB) and Alan Warner (EMCIA) OFCOM have now admitted there is a problem and are looking at the Wireless Telegraphy Act to include interference from networks, thus compounding the legal strengths of complainants.
Many PLT manufacturers used non-legitimate documentation as the basis for their Declaration of Compliance, citing CISPR/I/89/CD for their technical construction file reference. This document was acrimoniously withdrawn from the IEC's website having been discredited. Also this document was a Committee Draft (signified by the suffix CD) and was thus never a Standard which could be (nor should have been) referenced.
I strongly discourage the continued use of these products, and in particular for those who are relying upon the technology to achieve a home or small business network since there is a realistic chance that you may be required to ditch the devices and make other arrangements, at your own cost.
BT have discovered to their significant cost, the perils of using the PLN adapters as part of their BT Vision product, where, in cases that complaints have been made, BT had to replace the PLT devices with a hard-wired network or expensive Ruckus Wi-Fi.
Nige.
Heh, there's always someone who posts this whenever Homeplug is discussed on forums. I can only assume it's some kind of bot setup by the Wi-Fi Alliance. x)

I thought you could run other makes but you had to make sure that they were running the same firmware version (or something like that anyway). Not too good if what you say is true but I guess I'm stuck now. x) Still, I only got these because they allowed me to use the socket at the same time. I'm not sure any other model offers that.
