Slow Internet, Logs say DOS attacks, or am I just getting throttled?

Hello if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

In my flat we've noticed our once wonderful Virgin broadband is now slower than a slug.

I checked the router(WGR614 v9) log s and have noticed a ton of entries similar to this

Would these constant DOS attacks be responisble for our incredibly slow internet?

We have tried connecting only one device at a time to the router and the speeds are still rubbish.

Or are we a victem of some new crazy throttling times?

More information can be found at this other board which shows im not th eonly one suffering

    http://networking-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=14670

I've tried unplugging the router for 5-10 minutes and then re-plugging in but it doesnt seem to help.
I've asked on the virgin boards but not really had much luck, if anyone has any ideas how to stop this or even if these DOS attacks ARE the cause of my problems I'd be thankful.

thats not a DOS attack, if it was it would have a lot more in the logs.

It could be a bot but I doubt it will cause a huge slowdown

Re: Slow Internet, Logs say DOS attacks, or am I just getting throttled?

Last night's logs had DOS attacks at between 3-5 second intervals.

So these intrusions would not be responsible for our internet slowing down?

Are we talking about a business ADSL line here? I know its obvious but make sure no one is using torrents.

Given how spaced apart they are I doubt that they are the cause of your slowness (Wiki article on Teardrop DOS - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teardrop_Attacks). Turning the router off for a while might cause these attacks to stop for a while if they detect nothing at the other end.

From all the people I have known with virgin they can be notoriously bad for oversubscribing and low speeds. What does you router say the sync speed is?

    No its a domestic line,

We've tried seperate devices connecting one at a time, including the xbox, psp, latop, mac, pc, macbook, psp, 3g phone and each one gets horrid connection. So we've ruled it out being a specific device causing the slow down. Everything worked superbly before.

I think its your ISP, like flash said if it is an attack it wll be a bot and turning off your router can force to bot to move on.

I am on virgin, between certain times they "throttle" everyones lines, especially during what they class as the "peak hours".

They dont throttle the XL users on Virgin Media now - shame the 50Mb is so expensive

Aye I am on the 20Mb so I notice when it gets throttled with me gaming, mum on facebook with games, 1 sister doing same and other sister watching anime and the like, I notice it now and then. We complained to virgin about our cost plus the line problems we were having (Virgin said it was router, in the end engineer came out, it was a signal issue virgin 0 - 1 me) which fixed it, they then knocked £10 off our total monthly bill and informed us that Virgin are bringing out 100Mb next year, and if we call back then we should get a better deal..so cant wait now!

    lol

VM do not have the bandwidth to be able to offer true 20Mb to most people.
