    uni internet + ftp

i need to send a big file (7gig) to a friend off mine.

I tried setting up a FTP server using win7 and IIS, i can log in to it from the flat network and typing my own ip in to firefox but when its done from someone somewhere else it doesn seem to work, i guess its the uni firewall stopping it.

But same thing happens when he had set up his fpt exactly the same way. only his friends can connect to it but i cant. im guessing its again something to do with uni firewall. is there any way around this?

    Re: uni internet + ftp

do you really need to send the file through an ftp server? have you tried any instant messaging applications (msn, yahoo, skype, etc)?

    Try this https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikiped...dows_Live_Sync
It says each file can't be larger than 4gb though, so split the file in 2 or something.

    Re: uni internet + ftp

I guess you haven't setup your router in the flat correctly, i.e. NAT.

And IIS is not the best way to setup a FTP server. You have to DMZ that machine, due to the fact that IIS doesn't use a fixed data port, so you can't just NAT it. And it will certainly not publish its IP correctly from inside your network so you need a "smart" FTP client that correct the wrong IP address sent by the server.

    Re: uni internet + ftp

Would it not be quicker burning said file to a dual layer DVD and posting it?
    Or USB stick?

    Re: uni internet + ftp

You could always do something like compress / zip the file into smaller chunks - if you did it in under 2gb chunks and created a couple of drop box accounts, you could transfer it that way
