Slow ADSL Tonight?

At about 8:00pm the London Internet Exchange (LINX) had a major problem that caused instability and loss of connectivity. As LINX carries such an enormous volume of traffic (and the majority of the UK's internet traffic) it is quite possible that some connectivity may still be less than perfect as other providers may still have their port enabled and/or have congestion on other circuits.

Was wondering about that myself... I even tried switching DNS servers (which I'd been meaning to do for a few months anyway).

The problems started at around 5pm for me - terrible packet loss.

I was talking to somebody about the problem as it was unfolding, and he remarked that it was affecting 80% of UK ISPs, "Tiscali especially" to which I said "ah well, at least they won't notice the difference".

ha ha very true but don't foget Tiscali resell so there will be more than just Tiscali customers who are having issues.

Indeed. I'm with BeThere and they seem to go through Telehouse (not certain) which is obviously LINX'd up. My VPS in Manchester fared slightly better.

most ISPs should have quite a bit of bandwidth going through teledata, telecity etc but if they over sub they are going to be in a world of trouble at the moment.

We are feeling it a little in Harbour Exchange and Meridian gate but at teledata in Manchester it seems a little bit better.

my zen connection died at 11:30 pm and then again at midnight, leaving Trig on his own in a Spitfire fighting off the hordes and masses of Luftwaffe...

Update: No temporary solutions are available, as Network Rail will not grant access until 23:00 hours. We will continue our updates incase our 3rd party are able to gain access prior to this time.

Have always wondered what the easiest way to find out about aoutages is? If you cannot connect to the internet it's usually easiest to phone the ISP, but you'll be joining 10000 other people on the automated queueing system.
