    QFT - hard wired etrhernet is the way to go if you want maximum reliability and consistent speeds.

    I think I mentioned the original post, that my Linn DS player was working as well, that is wired to the router.
    I've ordered a Gigabit router anyway, I'll see how I get on with that.

    A Gigabit router won't improve your internet connection speed - which is far less than 100Mb/s that you get from 100baseT. But as you have found, the wired connection is better in terms of speed and consistency, so you could add a gigabit switch for your wired network and just have a single link to the router, which will run at 100Mb/s.

    have u tryed just getting a lont ethernet cable and testing it like that? just to rule out that its nothing to do with the plugs?

    I've found that the files that are streamed from my PC work fine, stuff that's streamed from my router works really slowly.
    I know I've a few errors on my network hard drive when the NAS does a self test, but I wouldn't have thought it would affect streaming.
    My motherboard in my PC is now knackered, so I'll do more testing when I get the new one.
