Slow speeds with homeplugs and network

As the title says I've problems with my network being slow......transferring files to my Netgear Duo NAS through Comtrend 200mbps homeplugs.
I only seem to get wireless speeds.....usually about 2.5MBps, which doesn't seem any better than when I was using wireless adaptors.
Copying stuff from my PC to my PS3 is about the same speed.........I only copy stuff over to my PS3, because streaming stuff is impossible at 2.5 MBps

I've tried different routers Netgear 834G, 834GT then a 834PN, but no improvement.
I'm on Windows 7, if that's any help.

I know the Comtrend and the Netgear aren't the fastest stuff for data transfer around, but I was expecting a bit faster that this

I should mention that when I try to stream stuff, it's using PS3server and the PC's inbuilt network card.

It can be that when the homeplugs are a great distance away or bad wiring around the house the speeds will drop which is what i'd suggest has happend to you.

If you can find the ip address of them and log on (default password is 'admin' i think) it will tell you at what speeds they are connecting to each other.

    Good point......

    Phy Tx Throughput = 109 Mbp + 86 Mbps
    Phy Rx Throughput = 86 Mbps + 77 Mbps

I typically get speeds of 6 meg a second on my homeplugs, but it can vary from 4 to 6.5 depending on which plugs I use. My house was built in the 70s, and the wiring not redone since then.

Not an answer to your question, but thought you might like a comparison.

That's about the speeds I was expecting (I think I'd be happy with around 4.5-5), we've not long had the house rewired.

If you can try plugging them in next to each other (or as close as possible) and see what speeds you get and what speeds they tell you they're connecting at.

As in the post above yours, don't get confused by MB and Mb.....I think that's about 12MBps.
Still only working at 2.5MBps and now my Linn Majik DS won't stream music from the NAS

Re: Slow speeds with homeplugs and network

I get similar speeds (maybe a bit faster, 3-4mb/s) between my netgear 200mbit ones, in a new (4year) old flat two rooms apart from each other. Interestly enough I get faster speeds between my linux box and xp htpc compared to my xp main pc and xp htpc

Re: Slow speeds with homeplugs and network

    An update.....

I got really slow speeds after unplugging the homeplug the other night, the PS3server has working at about 1500kbps, I left it overnight copying stuff the the PS3, when I got up the next day, it had started to stream data at 45000-55,000 kbps.....I think that's about 6.5MBps (I could be wrong there)......so I'm a happy chappy now
I haven't a clue why this is, or what I'd done to correct it.

A quick question, if I get a gigabyte router, will the speeds get any better?

Nope! The limiting speeds are when the homeplug talk to each other. Not on the cables

Re: Slow speeds with homeplugs and network

The speeds have dropped again today :-(

I'm getting really p'd off, if I knew what causing it I'd gladly spend a bit of money to sort it out, but I don't know what the reason is.

If you really want to get constant good speeds and your willing to spend money and a bit of time i'd wire up your house with ethernet cables.

Then you'd also see a difference with gigabit switch

Try unplugging everything you can from the mains to see if speeds improve. Something may be causing interference. Could be the central heating as well.
