Windows 7 & Vista networking problem - please help!

Someone please help me, this is killing me!

My desktop runs Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. I have a media PC running Vista 32 bit upstairs. They are connected to a router, the desktop by wireless and the media centre by ethernet cable. I would like to share the videos on my desktop PC with the media centre and be able to store files on the media centre. That is all.

I have tried everything I can possibly think of to get this going. Computers are in the same workgroup, password protected sharing is off, file sharing on, network discovery on etc etc...all standard stuff. When I click "Network" in the Vista start menu, sometimes my desktop shows up, sometimes not. If I click on it, it says something about not being able to find the path. Not even iTunes will see the dektop.

Is there anyone that can shed some light on this? It is driving me nuts...all I want to do is share some files!

    Thanks in advance,

    Tim

determine whether it is a hardware or a software problem..

check the IP addresses for both the machines.. if they are connected to the same router as you say they are .. then they must show the same IP addresses..
if not.. you have either a wiring problem with the media center or the wireless adapter for the desktop is faulty.. have it replaced..

if not.. then its probably a software problem..

I think you mean same range of IP addresses? Same IP addresses would cause a conflict.

Worth checking you can do a run to type access and maybe even trying to map a network drive and accessing stuff that way.

Also could be worth disabling your firewalls during testing (if you are worried about security, unplug you adsl line whilst doing this)
