    network name is duplicating self

hello, i am not real savy with...
the network name seems to repeating itself on the computer's choices of wireless networks to sign into. i have an actiontec modem, setup with wep password and ssid is turned off. however, i named the ssid "UnNamed" so as to fool any would be hackers thinking UnNamed would be the last ssid they would choose. so when i go to "connect to a network" i see the following list of networks to connect to....
    UnNamed 234567 connected
    UnNamed 23456789 Security enabled network
    UnNamed 2345678 Security enabled network
    UnNamed 234567 Security enabled network
    UnNamed 23456 Security enabled network
    UnNamed 2345 Security enabled network
    UnNamed 234 Security enabled network
    UnNamed 23 Security enabled network
    UnNamed 2 Security enabled network
    UnNamed Security enabled network
    Unnamed network Security enabled network

the last in the series, Unnamed network, is the non-broadcast of ssid.
i dont know if this is intelligible to you experts or not. if not, i will try to clarify in a later submission,
thanks, i was unable to post images.

I would guess that a number of other people thought the same as you!

Try changing it to something completely random.

Re: network name is duplicating self

    thanks for the reply,
no, i dont think anyone else is using the name, UnNamed. i did try another name and got some duplication although only duplicated once. I did notice that when i disconnected from the last "UnNamed" in the series, that i would then be connected to the next to last in the series, except it was only a local connection. and when i disconnect from that one, i would be connected to the subsequent one, and so fourth. I think it is some setting in the router or computer that is causing it to do this. just not sure what.

Try unplugging the router and see if any remain.

Re: network name is duplicating self

Ok, if i unplug the router and see what remains, that would tell me if they are all being generated from my router?
also, if i go to "manage wireless connections" i notice that the series of "UnNamed" connections are listed there, for what that is worth.
i am currently using some public wifi at the coffeeshop and do not see the repitition of names which further makes me think it is in the router.
could there be a setting in my computer as to how it acquires the IP address's, auto, fixed, static, etc, that is causing it to do this?

Yeah switching off the router and checking what was left would show you if there were other routers using one of those names (that many is unlikely unless you're in a hotel/Uni or something). IP settings shouldn't cause anything like that to happen, if anything I'd suspect the router. Do you have another computer you could use to see if it happens to that too?

To post an image you first need to upload it to either you forum gallery or somewhere like imagehost.org which will give you a forum link which you copy and paste here. If you switched off your router and you're still getting those names appearing it sounds like someone nearby is using a similar name to you. You could use something like netstumbler and check the MAC address of the access points.

    well, how about that.
