    HELP! Absolutely stuck.

    Hi Guys!

I need some help. Well, my brother actually, but he's turned to me and I'm stuck.

    Here's the problem.

At some point, not sure when, his internet connection stopped working. We've confirmed it's not a line problem since I'm using his broadband line to send this message right now via my laptop.

After a couple of us tried setting up various connections and playing around we got stumped.
I've just reinstalled windows xp home on his computer but I'm still having the same trouble. I'm hoping it's not the motherboards connector that's the problem so I was wondering if you guys had any ideas.

It's always been an always on connection.

    Thanks.

Hmmm you could try buying a cheap NIC for around $15 at most, i woudl think See if that sorts the problem as his motherboard connector may have jsut suffered from wear and tear.

    Re: HELP! Absolutely stuck.

    I'll have a look.

Is there anyway to check if that is the problem?

Also, I don't know if this helps, when I go to Network Connections it shows two:

    1394 Connection 2 - Enabled - 1394 Net Adapter

    and

    1394 Connection - Enabled - 1394 Net Adapter #2

    Connection speed at 400 Mbps.

But they don't seem to care whether the cable is plugged in at all.

    Thanks.

    Re: HELP! Absolutely stuck.

A 1394 connection is a Firewire connection. I'd be surprised if that is being used for the network connection. How is the PC connected to the router/ modem?

Did you install the correct driver for the NIC? If you go to 'control panel' 'system' 'hardware' 'device manager' are there any entries with yellow exclamation marks or red crosses?
Personally I'd get the make and model of the motherboard, go to the manufacturers website and download their network driver and give it a go.

Make sure its not some how disabled in the bios, also might be worth checking to see if there is a bios update. What model is the mobo?

    Re: HELP! Absolutely stuck.

The mainboard is an MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR.

I'm at home right now but will check the bios and device manager tomorrow. Where should I look in the BIOS?

Also, since that computer doesn't have direct internet access and I've just reinstalled windows, if there are any other updates that might help, if you could let me know that would be great, thanks!

    Thanks guys!!! Appreciate it greatly!

That's probably the best bet to be honest, we had lots of people come into our shop when I volunteered and generally all we did was re-install the LAN driver.
