I am looking for a firewall solution for my local network which one is better and why? Need to be able to do local website blocking by IP address

scrap my netgear dg834g what modem do you use jay? Does pfsense support web filtering?
How many nics does your soloution have is it the same kind of thing as smoothwall with green, red and blue interfaces?

yes pfSense can block by IP and adding the dansguardian plugin it can do a lot more

I don't think any standard routers will work with any of the above firewall distros.

Yeah you'd need a small computer to run it on, something like an Atom build or something like this is what most people tend to use.

Personally I'd go for iptables on a Linux box but it depends how comfortable you are with Linux and networking on whether you go down the same route. The 3 suggested solutions are all good as well to be fair.
You could use a router if you want more ports but a switch would do the job fine.
