    Help w/ Router -> Switch combo.

    Hi all,

    Moving the Router up the attic.

    Attic will have phone socket -> filter -> ADSL2+ Modem Router.

    My old mans study is below. He has 2 computers to hook up to the router. It "has" to be wired.

    What I'm thinking of is running a crossover cable down from the router to the study and hooking it up to a switch/hub.

    Would this be a good solution?

    Thanks,

    Andy

    Don't see any problem with that setup.
    Doesn't matter if the cable is crossover or not, switches can sense which type of cable it is using.

    Depends on where your phone line is coming in, putting it in the attic might reduce the internet speed if your internal wiring is crap.

    I have a similar setup:
    ADSL Router -> Switch 1
    Switch 1 -> Switch 2
    Switch 2 to HTPC and Gaming PC and Work Laptop
    Switch 1 -> Switch 3
    Switch 3 to Work PC

    (The extra switch keeps my LAN alive when the ADSL crashed)

    That will work, my own network has a router and four switches in it!

    Re: Help w/ Router -> Switch combo.

    Depends on the age and sophistication of the switch / hub you use. You may need to use a crossover cable for links between two older switches / hubs. As long as one end is newish then you should be fine with any old cat5 cable...
