    best way to set up simple switched network

    Hi,

    I am reconfiguring a basic network in an old church building (thick walls, not much cable access etc). I am wanting to connect up about 8-10 pcs and a couple of printers and photocopiers etc.

    At the moment this is achieved by daisy-chained 5-port switches, and i want to simplify it with one 16-port in the main office, one 5-port at the other end of the building, and one wifi access point. DHCP routing and internet are provided by a basic 4-port modem/router.

    My question is basically should the two swithes and the wifi acces point each come from a seperate port on the router, or is it better to have just the large switch attached to the router and everything else coming off that?

    i.e.

    Code:
    a)  Router/Modem (4-port) ------->  16 Port Switch  -------> 5 Port Switch
                                                        -------> wifi access point
    or

    b)  Router/Modem (4-port) -------> 16 Port Switch
                              -------> 5 Port Switch
                              -------> wifi access point
    The benefit of 'a' I can see is that if the router packs up all the connected devices will at least have local network access.

    The benefit of 'b' might be that there is less traffic on the single port of the router. This may just be an imagined non-problem however!

    Any advice/ideas would be useful.

    No difference either way IMO.

    Thanks, thats good to hear. I assume the router will only be giving out ip addresses not having any real traffic through. I'll probably go with option a as it makes it a bit easier to manage.

    Only traffic router would have to deal with is WAN traffic, and you obviously can't avoid that anyway.

    Re: best way to set up simple switched network

    Are both switches going to be 10/100 or will they be gigabit as well?

    if there is going to be a lot of LAN traffic it might be woth thinking about a gigabit connection between the two switches. If it's mainly going to be interent access then it really doesn't matter.
