    Good Quality Gigabit Switch

Need recommendations for a good quality gigabit switch, unmanaged is fine. Will be using to connect various computers and printer in a home network and then connect the switch to a Draytek 2820Vn ADSL router.

Was going to go for the Netgear GS108 but heard there were issues with it in terms of units failing due to poor quality components being used (apparently all the lights start flasshing and ports don't work).

Under a ton cost wise would be nice.

    Re: Good Quality Gigabit Switch

I use the GS series of switches and I've had 1 GS108 fail like you describe after about 3 years use. The problem was bulging caps so I bought some spares on ebay for about £2, replaced them (I think there were 4 that needed replaced) and everything has been working fine since (over a year ago). I would suspect (and hope) current builds should be immune from the bulging cap problem. Other than that 1 problem the GS switches are great.

    Re: Good Quality Gigabit Switch

I also use the GS series (108 and 105) and so far haven't had problems (but thanks for the heads up!). They do tend to run warm though.

I have a 3Com OfficeConnect 8-port gigabit switch. It supports jumbo packets, which is nice. Had it three years, has never stepped out of line.

Thanks chaps, like the metal casing of the netgear GS108 (I have an old 4 port switch) but there are too many reproted issues witht he GS108 - the flashing lights issue and also a lot of power supply failures. Lookslike I'll go the for 3Com - Thanks Steve

    Re: Good Quality Gigabit Switch

I have a Asus GigaX1005B which has never let me down in the 2ish years I've owned it. Infact it's been so reliable I had to lookup the name as I the last time I set eyes on it was the day I installed it into the attic, supports Jumbo frames too if thats your thing

Hang on.. thats not the right model number!

the correct model number is: GigaX 1105N

    Re: Good Quality Gigabit Switch

Home GigE switch-wise, I've had the following:

D-Link DGS-1005D (5-port) : had a completely different concept of "jumbo frames" to everything else on my network, not particularly useful (consigned to the bin)

SMC 8508T (8-port) : worked perfectly (including jumbo frame support) up until the day it decided to overheat and kicked the bucket

Netgear GS108 (8-port) : still going strong (it replaced the SMC) after a few years, never had an issue with it after ~4 years

The Netgear only has 2 connections from the server (up 24x7) and 1 from a workstation (used by visting guests only), it is uplinked to a D-Link DIR-655 router (with 802.11n and 4x GigE port switch built in).
The router has also been rock solid since purchase over a year ago (as a WAP, switch and router).

Both the Netgear switch & D-Link router see a lot of traffic as I VPN into the office and work with local VMs on the server quite a lot.

I use a plain old Belkin 5-port switch and never had any issues with it. Its metal in construction so keeps relatively cool, despite being directly sat on top of my router

Same as myself, I got a GS116 more than 3 years ago, it's still troopering on even under heavy load.
