Which Is Better??

Right, I'm networking my 2 rigs to share internet connection. ATM, I have Freeserve BB and an Alcatel Speedtouch Frog which is USB.
Basically, I would like to know what would be the best router/switch for the job as there are only a few usb ones about. Or, should I get an ethernet modem and ethernet router/switch?
I'm quite a networking n00b, so go easy on me guys

I've been told the Draytek Vigor2200USB is a good choice, but it is quite expensive.

personally - love netgear kit.
Shiny silver model (can't remember the model number) set it up for my neighbour in about 5 mins flat - and x-box live works very nicely through it also.

Be careful, one of the Netgear routers (not sure if it's the cable or ADSL router) constantly overheats. I'd be inclined to steer well clear of Netgear. Look at Linksys, now owned by Cisco. They are competitively priced and have a huge market share.

true about the overheating - linksys is pretty good - I've only used them for cable installations before, but they're really not bad!

I think it was the RP614 which had the heat issues - think it was withdrawn and replaced with the RP114 IIRC

If your just networking 2 computers the cheapest method would be to use a x-over cable and use ICS (thats if you use windows).

But in that case the computer plugged into the modem would have to always be on for the ICS to work on the other.

Also, if you are a n00b at networking this is a good start. IF i EVER get broadband i would update my network from a simple x-over cable too a router setup.

I've stopped using my Netgear hub, cos it was getting red hot...........fire hazard me thinks

Should have put that I really need to use a router, as I'm planning to use the ps2 network adapter to play online in the future. Thanks for the advice so far, will have a look at Linksys/Cisco now...

Linksys don't seem to have any routers that are compatible with USB ADSL modems

Its for that reason I'm leaning towards the Draytek, any other suggestions???

Tbh m8 I would forget about using the USB ADSL modem, it basically limits you to the Draytek and nothing else, whereas you have so much choice if you want a ADSL modem and router combined.

Weeeeeeellll...I have just set up a D-Link DSL-604+ wireless ADSL router for my big boss, which has a built-in ADSL modem, and that was pretty easy to set up (he likes the idea of browsing around the house, what can I say?) and works nicely. I've also just set up a D-Link DI-804V router (router only, no DSL modem) here at home since my SMC Barricade bought the farm. Again, nice to set up, it works luvverly, so I'd say give D-Link a go. That is the exact reason why I am asking the question, is it cheaper/better to go for an ethernet modem & router over the usb modem I have and the Draytek router??

it's better to get a router with built in modem.
There are a few which support both - i.e. have NIC WAN port and built in ADSL modem (by coninkidink - the netgear model prone to overheating - go figure!
