    Bluetooth????

hi, im pretty new to computers and thinking of buying a laptop. i travell to europe alot, lithuania, turkey, etc on business and was wondering if my facts were correct.

if i were to buy a laptop, and a bluetooth dongle, and a bluetooth compatible mobile phone, would i be able to connect to the net to check my emails.

i read, i think i read, a dongle would go into the laptop, the phone would communicate with that, i could then use my bluetooth compatible phone as a modem, and get emails using oulook. is this correct please.

    Thank you

(hope this is the right forum to ask in, if not, my appologies)

you hit the nail bang on the head there belly boy Yes indeed the communication between the lappy and the phone's inbuilt modem can be done no problems over a Bluetooth connection

Its doable - but be carefull as GPRS access is quite pricey

imo you might be better off using a secure webmail interface and finding a cyber cafe

Yes that is correct. It isn't particularly quick and GPRS prices are still quite expensive overhere compared to other countries, but that is how you would do it.

cool, price doesnt really bother me, its just i have a pc at home, and get my emails via freeserve, and when im away, i really need my emails as they are important to my work, and was thinking, if i could access them while in europe, then that would be great. most hotels i stay in have phone sockets for internet use, so i could use that ethod, but when on the move, that wouldnt be much use, thanks alot for the info anyway!

You could just use the web access service, however you should also be able to access your 'proper' Freeserve account as long as you set your email client up correctly.

The instructions for setting it up in Outlook Express are here - http://www.freeserve.co.uk/help/emai...tlooksetup.htm. Other email clients will be similar in terms of what you need to configure (pop3 & smtp servers, username, password, email address).

    cheers,
    dave

Also, I hate to say it, but CHECK whether your phone will talk to said Bluetooth dongle, especially if it's a No*spit*kia - we have a number of 6310s at work, as well as Dell Latitude D600s w/integrated Bluetooth and if the phone's firmware is anything less than v5.50 - forget it. Up until that point, the phones would only talk to a Nokia-branded BT card (which was handy, given as they stopped distributing the flipping things). Nokia spun off the Bluetooth side of things to Socket, who distributed an identical card, so they would talk to those, but they were pricey as hell. Later versions of firmware will talk to 3rd party BT adapters, though. Worth checking.

Belkin adaptors will work with almost *anything* (im yet to see one incompatibility report of them). They use the real bluetooth driver set, as opposed to some of these cheap ones, which only offer data tranmission (even than, they are well dodgy).

As for your freeserve account :
You will be able to recieve them via outlooking / your mail client without a problem once your connected, but GPRS charges are sky high if your abroad. You might also need to set it up prior to going there.

A quick note though : you wont be able to send mails from your freeserve account using a mail client, unless your connecting via a freeserve dial up or broadband connection. They do this to stop abuse of the mail servers and stop them being targets for helping spammers. If you need to send a mail from your freeserve account, you will have to use the webmail interface from their site
