Question Enabling Internet connection over Ethernet crossover cable?

Hi Hexus, slight confusion here, it's probably smack in my face, but I'm missing it at the moment...

I'm using a cross over cable from my PC to Laptop, I want to be able to switch off the wireless on my laptop, and use my PC's connection via the Ethernet cable.

I had this set up before, AND working, but since formatting machines etc, I can't get it to work recently.

"Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" is what I had checked before in the sharing properties of the adapter (Can't remember if it was the PC's wireless, I think it was). But I've tried that again, and no joy.

Anyway I get that going? Vista x86 on my Laptop, and Windows 7 x64 on my PC.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

    Cheers TAKTAK.

*Edit - Hmm I can't do that on the PC for some reason, only on the laptop.

Re: Enabling Internet connection over Ethernet crossover cable?

Any more info on why it won't work on the PC? Any error messages for example?

Re: Enabling Internet connection over Ethernet crossover cable?

Hi watercooled, I just been trying again, this is what it tells me:-

"to create a network bridge, you must at least two LAN or high-speed internet connections that are not being used by internet connections sharing"

and that comes after I try to select the local area connection, and the wireless connection...then right click, bridge.

I don't know why what I did last time doesn't work, just with "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" checked in the adapter properties. Hmm!!

    Maybe till tomorrow.

Re: Enabling Internet connection over Ethernet crossover cable?

Try unchecking "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" and try bridging again.

Re: Enabling Internet connection over Ethernet crossover cable?

You have got the network card on the laptop set to obtain it's IP automatically, haven't you? Also check that Windows has enabled ICS on the correct connection on the desktop (although if the desktop can access the internet it *should* have). Your internet connecting adapter should still be set to obtain IP automatically, the wired one you're connecting to the laptop should be set to 192.168.0.1. I'd also try checking the network connection between the laptop and the desktop *before* messing with the ICS / bridging settings.

That said, did I read correctly that you're sharing the wireless connection on the desktop? I don't understand why you'd want to do that rather than just use wireless on both devices...?

Re: Enabling Internet connection over Ethernet crossover cable?

Yes, I assume the network card is obtaining the IP automatically. The laptop has been formatted/factory reset the other day, and I haven't touched any settings since that.

And I've just noticed the PC is throwing up this message box "there is an ip address conflict with another system on the network" etc...

I've tried enabling ICS on all the different adapters there on my desktop, and no joy. And by entering that ip on the laptop

Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter - Which is named as wireless connection 2 on my desktop, could this cause any probs?

I've given up with this now anyway, I have no idea about networking. Meh. Wireless adapter on the laptop is a faulty (hardly connects), is why I wanted to have it off.

Re: Enabling Internet connection over Ethernet crossover cable?

    turn off internet connection sharing.
Make sure that your PC wireless and both the wired adapters are set to DHCP. I realise that neither the laptop or the PC will actually be able to get an address, it doesn't matter at the moment.
Wait for the PC to finish trying to get a DHCP lease.
    Now re-enable internet connection sharing.

You may now need to restart (or run ipconfig /renew) the laptop so that it sees the new network connection and gets a valid IP address.
