    Home networking advice please.

    Hi all.

I am looking at getting my home "ethernetted" up. i plan on using a gigabut cable DSL router and a gigabit switch due to the amount of ethernet ports i require.

I dont want to spend a fortune on equipment as it will cost about £200 just for the guy to run the ethernet cable through the house.

any suggestions for a router and a switch? i think 8 ports will be enough along with the 3 remaining ports on the router.

You said you wanted a Gigabit Cable DSL router, what internet connection do you have? Is it ADSL or cable?

My house was built a few years ago now so it isnt really an option.

just need advice on the equipment really.

I have a 10/100 pre n router now and i can install a 10/100 hub today, a little bit of cabling and i am away, my reasons for the install is to cable the ps3 hardwired so i can stream media gflitch free, hopefully 1080 mkv files.

! last question, cat 5e or cat 6? which is the best method for the connectors, the runs are 20m each.

    Re: Home networking advice please.

I have been told this one is good:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Netge...managed-Switch

Like you, I'm wiring up in the next few months, so I'm gonna get one of these.

And double faceplates for all the walls. At the moment, i'm trying to figure out the best thing to have on the wall where all the connections meet: some kind of 16 port face plate, but I've not managed to find one yet.

I hope you mean a switch rather than a hub.

Cat5e is just fine. Cat6 has more stringent installation requirements and really isn't needed unless you are doing longer runs, like in offices for example. Cat6 can go up to 10 gigabit connections, but the cost of this equipment is outrageous, and given how long it's taken gigabit to become main stream (it isn't completely there even now) I can't see the point in planning for it for home use.

If you are using a gigabit switch, I wouldn't worry about a router with gigabit ports, the switch will handle the 10/100 of the router just fine on one of it's gigabit ports.

    Re: Home networking advice please.

Cat 5e will be fine. I use that Netgear switch - workds well for me, although they do tend to run warm. There have also been reports of failure because of heat, but I haven't experienced this (and mine are on 24x7.)

The limiting factor on the internet connection will be the line speed - and there a few routers (that I know of) that have more than one Gb port (hoever, I tend to stick to Draytek gear!) so you might be better getting two 8 port switches, or a sixteen port for the network, and just running one link to the cable router, which will be your internet gateway.

    Re: Home networking advice please.

chavo its easyer if you use trunking but the box would stick out from the wall like the bt phone socket you would also have truncking showing. so you could come up threw the floor boards down stairs and up this would hide wires or you could drill out of the house and then go to the rooms you want use outdoor network cable for this.
