Phones over Cat6: how do I mux the phone master into the patch panel?

I'm planning a recabling of our house as part of a renovation project, and I'd like to use the new Cat6 cabling to each room for either a phone or an ethernet connection. At the remote (i.e. each room) end, I assume I use an RJ45-BT adapter. But at the patch panel/BT master socket end, what do I use to connect 2 or 3 cables from the ethernet patch panel to the phone master socket (which will also carry a microfilter for router connection)?

And you can't be too basic in your explanation - assume intelligence but ignorance on my part

    Thanks in advance...Neil

Re: Phones over Cat6: how do I mux the phone master into the patch panel?

All you need is a phone line splitter adapter and a RJ45 to BT plug (not socket like in the rooms) connected to each out the ports on the phone splitter.

I was going to list the seperate parts, but this site seems to have everything you could need:

There will be other places to get all this though.

Re: Phones over Cat6: how do I mux the phone master into the patch panel?

Thanks for the quick reply. Where does the microfilter that goes between the BT master socket and my router sit in this configuration? And does each voice-converted outlet port need a microfilter on it as well, or that embedded in the adapter?

    Cheers...Neil

Re: Phones over Cat6: how do I mux the phone master into the patch panel?

The microfilter sits directly in the master socket, the router/modem connected to the ADSL side and the 4 way adapter in the phone side. In that configuration you only need one microfilter.

You only need multiple filters when you have wires extensions running directly from the back of the master socket.

    Code:
master socket --> Microfilter --> Phone side to 4 way adapter
                                  --> ADSL side to router

Re: Phones over Cat6: how do I mux the phone master into the patch panel?

The easiest way to do phone over cat is to get a standard phone cable cut it in half and put 2 RJ45 connectors on it using the orange pair which are at one end. By making a custom cable you could use the other pairs for something else. Wire all the phone back to the master socket install the filter there with the adsl comming off that, on the other half use phone doubler/trippler to install the phones. Why not get DECT phones rather than real cables?

Why are you using cat 6, its harder to work with than cat5e and is not shielded so its not the way things are going, Cat 6e is an FTP (Foil shielded twisted pair) not a UTP cable. Cat 6e does 10G, Cat 6 does 2.5G, Cat 5e does 1G, Nothing on the market works at 2.5G so Cat6 is a waste of money.

When you install things install more cables than you need, double what you need to each room. You don't have to wire them up, you have a spare if one fails, and you don't have to start using switches as soon as you want a second device in the room. Also other things like phone, KVMs, remote USB can work over cat cables so having some spare is very useful.

Re: Phones over Cat6: how do I mux the phone master into the patch panel?

Thanks for being so didactic! I'm planning Cat 6 because I don't rewire my house every year: this is a 10-year plus plan. DECT phones? Yes I will use some, but I want to put the base station somewhere else than in my workshop where all the cabling will be. And I want to allow for fax. And I am laying more than I need, for the same 10-year reason.

Please read what I said, your solution isn't even now proof 10G equipment exists now. You need CAT 6E, 10G ethernet works over CAT6E not CAT 6, no network equipment uses the bandwidth of cat 6. The problem with Cat 6 was it was a wiring standard and they didn't bother to ask the network equipment manufacturers so nothing supports the headroom over cat 5E.

BTW 10G equipment however uses about 45W a port so don't expect to see it any time soon a desktop, 1G uses 5W and 100MB 1W.

Re: Phones over Cat6: how do I mux the phone master into the patch panel?

Also IEEE 802.3ab (otherwise known as 1000BASE-T or just gigabit Ethernet) was ratified 11 years ago, and it still isn't completely main stream in the consumer space. Look at the number of routers that have gigabit ports, there are very few, same goes for most ethernet connected devices. Only really desktop PCs are gigabit as standard. Even most netbooks are still just 10/100, this may be due to power requirements though.

The 10GigE spec was first published in 2002, with amendments still being made in 2008. I can't see it ever becoming necessary in the consumer space, if it does it will take at least a decade, probably two. And by that point who knows what we will be doing with wireless or other transmission methods and protocols.
