    Problems with Virgin Broadband

I am paying for "up to" 8Mb broadband but consistently get far lower speeds and today is no exception:

I am thinking of switching my ISP, does anybody have any suggestions?

    Cheers

    Re: Problems with Virgin Broadband

Assuming you are not on cable, Virgin have some problems today with ADSL speed. I had to ring them earlier as i have only been getting ~500k on an 8mb line.

    Re: Problems with Virgin Broadband

How far is the exchange from your house? if it is too far then switching ISPs would do much good but if you are relatively close switch to O2 if your exchange is LLU enabled

Like I said only go to O2 if your exchange unbundled (LLU) cos if not you go on the O2 access which piggybacks on BTs network and its very poor

I have been with Virgin for many years now but feel sure I should be getting better broadband performance. We don't have cable in Clitheroe and as things stand it will probably never be installed because it's not economical apparently. It's all old copper cabling as well with no fibre optic connections to the main hubs so obviously speed is going to suffer but a consistent speed of 3 or 4Mbs would be most welcome. I'd hate to swap ISP and find there was little difference.

Edit: Just tried another speed test to the same Manchester server (Approx. 30 miles away) and got 1.01Mbs so things have improved from my previous 0.44Mbs but still you'd expect more wouldn't you on a "up to" 8Mbs service?

    Cheers

you should do but how much depends on how far you are away from the exchange and also
BT Wholesale WBC has set an enablement date of 31/03/2010 for the Clitheroe exchange
you should get a good boost from that

all I can think of is the quality of the cables from cabinet to the house are in better conditon for your neighbour, Im 250 metres away and I sync @16.5Mbps but get 14Mbps on speedtest and downloads,
also depending on where in the street your neighbour is they may be served by a different cabinet changing the distance to the exchange (cable travel not as the crow flys), I served by 1 exchange but the bottom half of my street is served by another

My broadband speed at the moment is amazing! Nice one Virgin Media.

    Re: Problems with Virgin Broadband

    @ paulktreg
I'm in the clitheroe area too with O2 Broadband... Our exchange is LLU equiped and I get 14Mbs with them...

I even run a couple of gaming servers so hence the speed in that test above is a little bellow what I would normally get... I would seriously recommend you change to O2 mate cos from your speed test you are being massively short-changed.

Just for your reference our excahnge is near the train station, so if you are geographically close to there you should be sorted (I know im only 500m away... jammy get )

Also depending on what Virgin package you are on I would guess that O2 might even be cheaper for you, but that depends... anyway hope that helps

Ironically I stumbled upon this thread trying to see whether or not we had Virgin Media out here but I think I'll give it a miss now

From the looks of things they are doing some weird routing of your connection giving your crap pings and speeds, that is just guessing as I'm told <50miles to manchester and you get ~100miles... anyways hope you get it sorted (CHANGE YOUR ISP!!)
