Angry Hosting services - Are they all this crap?

Just fired an email to my hosting company - www.fasthosts.co.uk.

Nice simple query, as they dont give you access to your DNS records, mailed them to ask how to change the MX records for my domain. Included in the email my account number, domain name and my name.

Got an autoresponse back, saying that they can't process it without my Account name login, PIN number and account code. Right.... so you want me to send this via email? How many security issues here?

So I mail them back saying you gotta be taking the pee right? Get the same autoresponse straight back at me!

So.... forwarded the mails to their accounts department, saying WTF is going on.... That's just bounced back cos ithe mailbox is over its mail limit!

If they think I'm phoning a 50p per minute helpline they kiss my account goodbye.

    I use web-mania they're pretty good and cheap -
not the most intuitive interface, but I've had little down time over the last two years on one of my sites, and they're dirt cheap.
They had no problems with my various dns requirements for smtp... they were a little surprised that I was using my own smtp server rather than theirs tho.

ukhost4u.com - they're even giving out a free dotcom with new accounts - have a really cool control panel that automatically installs phpbb2, invisionboard, phpmyadmin etc, and has some real nice webstats. 24hr tech support, member forums. They have a demo of the control panel, there's some mention of your MX thing too!

    1gb storage and 25gb bandwidth a month for 29.99 +VAT

that's what we're using to host our band website www.manymoremusic.com

What sort of services are you after Jiff? We just moved our dedicated servers to a new company (the old provider had grown too quickly and the support was going down the toilet) and they seem pretty good so far...Depends what you are after tho as they specialise in dedicated boxes...

UnitedHosting is good currently with them, full control over everything you could need.
£8 500mb 10gb per moth. One company i can recommend to stay away from is valuehost.com. Prices are cheap, service is ok (when it works), customer service sucks, but recently suffered a major DOS attack and have still not fully recovered 2 weeks after, still filtering traffic so not everyone can get through

One & One hosting is a decent one. We use it for gibtek, its maybe pricey £8.99 p/m for a pro package and £16.99 a month for the business one but we have been with them for 3 years and not had a second of down time, wehave access to everything and anything under the sun which is a bonus. Give em a look, and when you email them you get a response from them within the hour on average and the most i have ever waited on a call was 5 mins before someone answered

Currently using www.winsocket.com virtual private server arrangement for www.tangent21.com and it works a treat, especially as we've got a custom debian install, also with it being US based the pricing is dirt cheap with the current exchange rate
