PC5 can ping PC1 but not visa versa...

Hiya, I've got 2 pcs on a network PC5 can ping PC1 but not the other way round.

Also on PC5 when I click on on windows firewall in the control panel, I get the message box: "Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings."

I read that the first symptom almost always means that there's a bably configured firewall on PC5.

Both pcs have zonealarm on them but the first thing I do before I do the pings is turn Zone Alarm off. By the way I get the same error about the windows firewall settings before and after I've turned off zone alarm on PC5.

Windows security center has been told not to monitor the firewall PC5 but I just found out that when I open the security centre on PC1 it say "the security center service has not been started or was stopped".

Basically I want to be able to ping PC5 from PC1. If anyone has any advice that'd be great.
    Cheers,
    Toby

Definitely a firewall problem, might want to sort that out before you do anything else..
Just to confirm it is the firewall, you can try turning off the firewall service on pc5 and then try pinging again..

    [windowskey]+r > services.msc

Find windows firewall then stop it.

Cool, thanks for that "[windowskey]+r > services.msc" trick. I'll definitely try it when I'm in tomorrow.

I was under the impression that someone had already turned windows firewall off (surely they should have done that before they'd installed zone alarm; 2 firewalls running at the same time sounds like a bad idea). But I guess this is a good way to check for sure if it's on or off.

Re: PC5 can ping PC1 but not visa versa...

Gah, when I run services.msc on PC5, windows firewall isn't even listed. I can see it fine on PC1. So I still can't confirm whether windows firewall is running/not running/plotting my destruction on PC5.

Does anyone have any ideas about why windows firewall wouldn't even list itself in services.msc or how to rectify the situation?

    Cheers

Re: PC5 can ping PC1 but not visa versa...

First thing I'd check are the IP settings on each PC

    ipconfig /all
subnet mass should be the same on both as well as default gateway

Re: PC5 can ping PC1 but not visa versa...

Thanks MaddAussie. I tried what you said and the subnet mask and default gateways were the same for both pcs.

    I found a fix though!
I was reading the fix on this webpage and I checked in the registry on PC5 and found that some of the keys it mentioned are missing as compared to the registry on PC1 which accepts pings no problem. So I decided to go ahead with the fix that it describes. First I uninstalled zone alarm by the way, just cos I thought it might complicate things.

After following the instructions in the fix, ping pretty much worked...

One slightly odd thing is that I still have to disable windows firewall in order for a simple ping to work. I thought that ping would work even with windows firewall on. Is that not the case?

Anyway, thanks for your help everyone!

ps. Is there a way to mark this thread as "solved"? cheers

You probably have ICMP disabled in the firewall, which is the protocol ping relies on.
