    How does Virgin cable work?

Hello. Apologies in advance about the rather ambiguous nature of this thread!

I have a basic understanding of setting up broadband using ADSL routers, but have just switched to Virgin cable and am slightly confused how it actually works.

In addition to the cable tv box, I've got another box which I assumed was a router (coax going in, cat 5 connecting to my PC) but I can't seem to access it from my machine. Doing an 'ipconfig' it looks like my pc has been assigned a static IP (rather than the router having the static IP which is how I'm used to setting up ADSL) and I can't access the default gateway which has been assigned.

I'd like to access this router (or what ever it is) to have a look at the settings etc.

If it is the box with the co-ax cable going into it and the LAN cable coming out then this is not a router, this is the cable modem for the virgin service.

If you need a router, you generally get the DLINK DIR-615 with the 50Mb install at the moment, but for the others it appears you have to supply your own router.

This other box you have is a cable modem, not a router. If you want to use a router you'd need to connect a cable between the ethernet port on the modem and the WAN port on the router.

The public IP address you have from Virgin is dyanmic, well, sticky really in that they don't frequently change but they're not static. If you connect the modem directly to your PC you should find that your PC has that public IP address.

Depending on what modem they've given you there may be nothing of interest to see, but if you go to http://192.168.100.1 you'll get the web interface.

When you do get a router make sure it is a cable router and not the ADSL ones you can get.
