Possible to block all torrent traffic on a Netgear WGR14?

I'm wanting to know if it's possible to block torrent traffic through a Netgear WGR14's router ui page?
I've had a look but not sure what im doing.
Would like to set it up so all torrent traffic is blocked between 5pm and 9pm.
Also is it possible to also block skype traffic?

    Block ports 1-79, 81-442, 444-65535 ? (leaves 80 for http and 443 for https open )

Plus leaving whatever other ports are needed by whatever programs, i.e. steam, MSN etc. As you deem fit.

    Sure it's messy

There may be a less messy way, but it's something i've never looked in to, plus i don't know the routers options .

Unlikely, you'd need deep packet inspection like the isps to block torrents (or at least something a bit more advanced than what a regular router does). Even harder if the packets are encrypted too. Closing ports might slow down the torrents but it won't stop them.

Closing ports wouldn't stop them, but it sure would make things hella slow (to the point where the offender might just give up)

You could compile/find a list of torrent sites and block access to them, making harder to get hold of the torrents in the first place.

Can you block file extensions on a router level?

You could block torrent sites.. but if they manage to nab the torrent file the client would just resort to dht and then it's no different

Since you can manually select ports in most torrent apps, I'm not seeing right now how that would stop torrents - unless you're saying it would take so long to find an open port they would just give up.

Blocking torrent sites is a possibility, but there are so many aggregators out there I think it would be tough, and file extensions aren't much use because most sites have got wise to that now and provide .txt links that can be renamed on download.

There are two issues here I can see - if the downloading of torrents is done by somebody in the household, then they should use uTorrent or similarly suitable app and use the scheduler to set which hours can be used for up/down traffic. If you can't rely on them to do that, then I'm kind of wondering why you're entrusting them with access to the router.

Social solutions tend to work better than technical solutions in these kinds of cases... otherwise it just turns into a stupid game of cat and mouse, wastes everybody's time and starts a bigger argument than would've arisen in the first place. In my experience, at least

Indeed, I have mine set up to download while everyone is sleeping and to trickle download at any other time.
If someone else is downloading and it's affecting me, I just ask.
