Exclamation Internet accessible on Win7 but not on XP!!Please Help

    Hi,
I have a Dual Boot system with XP(SP2) and Win 7 Ultimate.
I have a DSl Cable Connectiion and since after removing the Conficker Worm which recently attacked my XP system,I'm unable to connect to the Internet.
When I try to ping my DNS Server(172.16.0.1)--it shows Destination Host Unreachable.
But my Local Area Connection port is connected with full strength(10.0 Mbps speed).

Whereas I have no problems accessing Internet on the same connection on my Windows 7.

I called the Service Provider Technician and they said that the connection is working fine(which is true since I can access it from Windows 7),and hence they have nothing to do on their behalf. They suggested its something wrong with Windows itself.

Has the worm corrupted any settings??
Please could you advice how do I get my Internet connection working again?

    Thanks in advance

This is probably related to your problems described here:
    http://forums.hexus.net/help-technic...ease-help.html

You will probably need to repair broken XP components or drivers. Your best bet would be to backup your data and re-install windows, making sure to update it to the latest version, but you can try repairing windows system files and reinstalling drivers first.

Can you ping 127.0.0.1 ? Are there any remnants of the malware left?

If you have your Windows installation CD, run "sfc /scannow" to repair corrupt files.

"sigverif" is also a good utility to run to check file integrity, but don't assume that everything which comes up is infected - I think it needs a proper internet connection in order to retrieve some certificates.

I believe his winsock api had been corrupted by the malware as described in the thread http://forums.hexus.net/help-technic...ease-help.html

I have posted a solution to this there.

It was indeed a winsock problem. By restoring his winsock api internet access was regained - see thread for details.
