    DG834 Address reservation question

    Hi Chaps,
I have a an issue with address reservations on my DG834. It seems any address reservations are ignored.

E.G. when my mediasmart server sleeps at midnight and awakes at 6am it is given a new address by the DHCP in the DG834. This also occurs with my HP 7680 printer.

    Any suggestions?

Are you 100% sure you're entering the MAC addresses correctly?

You could try setting a static IP address on the devices rather than using DHCP reservations.

I would normally do that however the HP EX490 Server and the HP 7860 AIO do not allow you set addresses manually.

I am correct in assuming when the server wakes it will look for the Mac address you have reserved and not just assign the first free address from the DHCP?

Being limited in my network knowledge I initially assumed the address reservation function did not allow DHCP to serve out that address.

Would I be correct to assume that when the server or printer is turned on the Router sees their Mac addresses and automatically assigns the reserved address to that device?

Thank you all again in advance for your advice so far

    Re: DG834 Address reservation question

Yeah, you're right - basically, when a device connects joins the network it broadcasts a DHCP request which the DHCP server on the router responds to by first looking in the reservations table to see if it should assign a specific IP address to that MAC address or if not is assigns it one based on rules i.e. randomly/sequentially for example. Other stuff such as default gateway, DNS, subnet mask are sent along with the client's IP address.
Make sure you're assigning the devices an IP within the same subnet as the router - assuming this is a home network your router is most probably using a 192.168.x.x/24 address so if, for example, your router is 192.168.0.1 then you must assign addresses from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254.

    Re: DG834 Address reservation question

I've got a DG834GT (the rebadged Netgear one from Sky) and an EX470.

Whilst the EX470, or 490 for that matter, doesn't have a setting to set its IP address directly, you can use a Remote Desktop Connection and set it through Windows.

That really shouldn't be needed though. I have my router (192.168.0.1) assign an address to the home server (192.168.0.2) without any issues. Are you sure the MAC address you entered in LAN IP Setup matches the one shown in Attached Devices?
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

0iD: Plus weeing in it every now & again does it good
scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.

    Hi,
Yes the MAC does match the one on the attached devices list . I have just looked at at my firmware on the router, it is about 7 versions old! I will do an upgrade to .16 tonight and see how things progress over the next 48 hrs.

Thank you all very much for your input and guidance
