    Very slow broadband

    Hi all

My parents live a long way away from the local exchange, it'll be roughly 4 miles or more. They have broadband, but it's very slow, the speedtest result is below.

I know the distance from the exchange means that the speed is never going to be amazing, but it should be able to manage better than this. The other strange thing is that the router is connected at 2496Kbps downstream and 448Kbps upstream. Would replacing the router make any difference? The router is a netgear wireless router (DG834GT).

If anyone has any advice it would be appreciated as usual

    Andy

There's a huge difference between the sync rate and throughput so I'd talk to their ISP nd ask them to get their BRAS profile reset.

It is also worth trying the BT Speedtest, it tests the raw speed between their router and the DSLAM in the exchange and would highlight if the problem is between the router and DSLAM or elsewhere.

I doubt the router is to blame, but if you have access to another one it might be worth giving it a try.

    Re: Very slow broadband

my plus.net account (owned by BT) gave me an ultra slow connection albeit not as bad as that. I am around 3.5 miles away. Contacted CS and they said there was something that was not right so they sorted it out and now I am getting 9mb. Not sure if this was an isolated incident but those numbers look really really bad
