Zen doubled my download cap this month :-) but my speed increased too !

I know lots of you think that £25 per month is a lot, so ignoring that, for the first time EVER, in May I hit my 25gig download/upload limit!

Downloading games to test and mammoth online activity bought me up to the 25 gig so a couple of quid spent online to increase my bandwidth was invested to keep me working.
but then, purely by coincidecem Zen upped everone's limit to 50gb

I get to keep the slight amount left over that I didn't use from my £2 spend...
but what's weird, and what this thread is about...
is that my broadband speed increased dramatically on the same day.

I was moved across to ADSL2 a while ago, and with my new router, I was getting the obvious upload improvement but not a lot of download increase... and that's been for 3 months.

but now... it's gone up noteably.

Any thougts or inside info on why guys? I'm not saddened, clearly, but it would be good to know why?

I am also on Zen, and I have just checked my router stats. My speed has also gone up, but in my case only by about 5% (~6400 Kbps to 6784 kbps)

My understanding of how ADSL works, is that it is possible for the ISP to "turn up the volume" a little if they want to, but they have to balance things carefully as otherwise the noise will go up as well and the overall speed will go down. I guess Zen have been fine tuning the gain on our lines.

On a related note, I got a much bigger increase in ADSL speed a couple of months back by sorting out the phone cables in my house. I installed a new high quality splitter next to my master socket, and then ran both the voice and the ADSL along Cat5 to my office. The speed went up from just over 4 Meg to around 6.

The ADSL filter, cable and associated stuff came from Clarity, though I did have problems with my order with them, which they where rather slow to sort out, so I can't really give them a full recommendation.

Re: Zen doubled my download cap this month :-) but my speed increased too !

Hmm - I've had a 50GB limit since I moved to ADSL2 (at £30/month) but as I'm only about 1.5Km from the exchange I get around 6500Kb/s anyway.

However looking at this link shows that Zen have doubled all their limits - so I must check mine - and the line speeds!

Hmmm - download has doubled, but my line speed has dropped a bit - nothing dramatic, but there has abeen a gradual reduction since January. Still, last time that happened there was a BRAS reset so I'll just watch and wait.

Yes, but you are on cable - not ADSL.

Speedtest never gets the DL right, i get around 24Mb with GrabIt.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Re: Zen doubled my download cap this month :-) but my speed increased too !

I've been with Zen ever since my God-forsaken bit of the world got broadband (about 4-5 years ago.)
They've been nothing short of excellent with every dealing I've had with them.
I have, however, been paying £25 per month for all that time for unlimited downloads on my.. 512 kpbs line.. yes, the best I can get, living in the sticks as I do. They offered me the line upgrade and capped d/ls but as they couldn't guarantee the line speed would increase then I decided to stay where I was. I'd been on ISDN before that and can still remember when I was a LPB on Quake 2 online.

    Ho hum.

So don't feel too bad when looking at Teepee's stats!

I think my Zen connection is about 14mbit down and 1.2mbit down, or something like that (connection rate anyway). I'll do a speed test later today when I get home.

Re: Zen doubled my download cap this month :-) but my speed increased too !

I used to be on Zen with the unlimited 512Kb ADSL option, and managed to download up to 60GB one month.

As Zen went to ADSL Max with a particularly low limit (25GB? I've downloaded 12GB in a day rebuilding systems..) I looked around elsewhere and moved to Be Internet. Slightly cheaper, 10+ Mb down, 1.2Mb up on the same line, no limits. I might consider moving back to Zen if Be fail, and once their 100GB/month allowance is in place..

I wanted to sign up to Be, but there was some confusion about my exchange. Samknows.com said it was due to be enabled at a certain date, Be knew nothing about it. That was a year ago and it's still not enabled.

BTW only download counts against your limit upload is for information only. Checkout the Zen Portal.
