rubbish internet speeds - advice please

hey chaps, biting the bullet and getting married.....eeek

moving in to the misses house, and she currently has sky bb, which is sooooo slow, she did have the upto 10mb package, but on a speed test often only scores a maximum of 400kb download speeds, she is now under skys advice on the 2mb limit as no point paying for speeds the cannot achieve. She was with talk talk before and that was pretty slow if memory serves.

Im a keen gamer and have lots of devices and this is gonna be an issue, something i have not experienced myself having always had great speeds at my current address, she lives in a well built up area, so not sure if there is an issue.

Can anyone recommend a good web site to enter addy details that gives accurate advice as to what is best in that area, i have found some under google, but is there a recommended one?

It really depends on how far away from the exchange you are. If it's more than a few miles your connection speed drops a fair bit.

I'd recommend going to Samknows and finding out where ur local exchange is. You could go to virgin but they have download limits etc etc so might put you off. Personally I'm considering upgrading my std DSL Max line to a ADSL2+ connection as I'm only a mile away from the exchange.

For the moment, try raising an issue with the ISP (sky) to check all is ok with your connection.

connect the router/modem direct to the test socket so that all internal cabling in the house is removed, this will at least let you know if the internal wiring in the house is causing an issue.

These will give you a pretty good picture of your speed, how it compares to others in the area, and what ISPs are available.

Quoted! There's no point looking at different ISP's until you can be sure its not a cabling issue.
