help please on home network and shared printer

i just dont seem to be able to set up a home network! I have two wireless lap tops (ie neither plugged into router) running xp - I want to be able to access one from the other - is this possible? Also I wnat to be able to pirnt on a printer attached to one of them form the other. I guess this is a really simple question but just dont seem to be able to work it out.

I have a netgear router plugged into another netgear router to extend the range.

i would be very grateful for your help as it is driving me bonkers!

Re: help please on home network and shared printer

Do this in stages. Plug both laptops into one router (wired) and make sure that you have printer sharing enabled on the one with the printer. Either assign static IP addresses to the laptops or make sure the DHCP server is running on the router. When that is working, enable wireless working on eath computer (with appropriate security - WPA preferably) and again make sure it all works.

Are you trying to use the second router as a wireless repeater? It may be possible, but you will need to look at the configuration/set up pages of that device to make sure it is configured correctly. It isn't a device I am familiar with, so I can't give you any details.

It would be helpful if you could post what you have done so far, and what is the end point that you want to achieve. Are you planning to connect the two routers through an ethernet connection? Will one of the routers also have an internet connection?

Re: help please on home network and shared printer

yes sorry - poor explanation bgy me. One router plugs into phone line and the other plugs into that one via long ethernet cable and dhcp is running (I am no epxert but someone told me how to set this up - I think one gives out a certian amount of addresses (like 0-200) and the other the rest (like 200-255) if this makes sense - so they both work as wireless internet access points.

Both laptops (and anywones) work fine for internet connection anywhere in the house. It is how to network them together that I cant set up.

    so grateful for your help

You need to set up "file and printer sharing" on both laptops - part of the properties for the lan connection.

You'll also want to make sure they're in the same "Workgroup" it just makes life easier down the line, especially for print sharing. It is in the System option under control panel. I forget which tab though, it is fairly obvious when you see it.

Re: help please on home network and shared printer

    It should do.

Providing they are both sharing then they should be able to see each other, also having them in the same work group makes things easier. I know my Win7 PC can see all devices on the network, including the 360 and other laptops and PC's can see my Win7 PC <3

Definately...maybe! Windows networking can be a bit hit and miss - especially if you are using different operating systems. But enabling file sharing on the laptop should fix the problem. It can help if you map shared drive on the 'client' machine (so the shared drive on the remote machine apperas as a drive on the local machine)

    ^^ This ^^

I tried to set it up when I first built my PC but it wouldnt work at all. I went to the GameOn Lan thing and it worked there, got home and it was working fine..I was a bit :@ that it suddenly worked but also happy at the same time.
