    how to "bypass" network monitoring?

hi i just wanted to know
at places like education or some work places they use (i believe) captive portals which you get given your own User name and Password so that you can use any computer even your own
however by doing this im guessing the can link every outgoing connection to say a website exactly to who was viewing it.
now i wanted to know if you used a VPN software would they only see the outgoing connection to the vpn and thus wouldnt be monitoring your internet?

yes but if it was setup correctly you wouldn't be able to do that either.

If you get caught doing this you will be in a world of trouble.

Re: how to "bypass" network monitoring?

If it works, then they shouldn't be able to see it - no.

But you'll doubtlessly be contravening some usage policy they have, so if you're caught... you probably know what's likely to happen better than we do.

One word: netflow. Pretty graphs, easily caught. Then HR gets involved.

Re: how to "bypass" network monitoring?

Agree with Jay here. A VPN that uses encryption in it's packet encapsulation would prevent anyone from seeing what you're doing. Be aware that some institutions will even block an outgoing VPN connection, and an easier solution might be to simply use something like LogMeIn to another PC.

And on that note, I think this thread has run its course.

The network monitoring software/hardware has undoubtedly been put there for a reason, however spurious you may think it to be, with likely very harsh consequences for contravening HR or IT Usage Policies.

Not exactly a wise idea all in all.
