    Bitcomet blocked on USB MODEM!?

    Hi there,

Got a Bitcomet blocked port problem but on a USB MODEM! Its a Sagem F@st 800 E2T on Tiscali ADSL, connects to the PC by USB.

Suddenly (after months of working fine), Bitcomet shows a yellow light for blocked port. It takes a while to realise this (its grey for a few minutes). So the download speeds are painfully slow.
    What I've tried:
Disabling firewall and AVG resident shield - still no luck. The firewall already had port 20309 UDP and TCP open.
Resetting PC and modem few times - no luck
Setting DNS servers to OpenDNS - actually this just means the BitComet light stays on grey...

Apparently this started after the internet connection went down once. Other things to note, in firewall settings theres an unticked box called "UPNP framework" with ports TCP 2869 and UDP 1900 open in there (never noticed this before so not sure if its normal).

As its a modem though theres no NAT or private IP addresses or even a modem portal webpage! (far as I'm aware anyway).

Has Tiscali started blocking Bitcomet packets?

    Much thanks,
    Dan Gent

AFAIK Bitcomet doesn't use its own proprietary protocol, it's a BitTorrent/HTTP/FTP client so I don't think that Bitcomet could have been specifically blocked. However they might have started blocking/throttling BitTorrent traffic if it's causing speed problems for other users or something?

Re: Bitcomet blocked on USB MODEM!?

IIRC, tiscali are doing something to torrent traffic , be it filtering or throttling and this is clear in their T&C's as they state the following under section 3.8

3.8 With the intention of ensuring our Network performs consistently in all locations across our Network and at all times of the day, we reserve the right to manage internet applications across the Broadband Services at our discretion as we see fit. This may include, but is not limited to, prioritising web traffic and email over file sharing activities during times of high congestion.
Have you tied 'encrypting' the torrent traffic as this can make it run faster in some instances?

Re: Bitcomet blocked on USB MODEM!?

Firstly let me apologise for my terminology. I meant to write "bittorrent packets". Of course there's no protocol for Bitcomet, silly me ;^)
My next plan was to try Vuze or another Torrent client to see if that works. I had a feeling they'd be blocking bittorent packets though. Few years ago I read that it accounted for 40% of all net traffic, now I assume its even more!

Lee - what software would you recommend for encrypting bittorrent packets? Anything specific to use? I presume you don't have to wrap Bitcomet in some IPSec encapsulation nastyness!
BTW, I'm well impressed that you actually quoted the T&C of Tiscali! I shop at Scan all the time (ordered £150+ worth last week and more this week) and I will continue to be doing so after such help!

    :^)

    Thanks so much,
    Dan Gent

Re: Bitcomet blocked on USB MODEM!?

You can find a quick guide on how to encrypt the traffic at the link Here

Changing the port numbers as well might help.

Other than that, if they're still slow it might be worth looking elsewhere to get a better QoS from an ISP

Re: Bitcomet blocked on USB MODEM!?

    Hi Lee,
I tried a few different port numbers at the time and still no luck. Read the guide you posted on encrypting. Uses a stream cipher doesn't it (RC4 iirc). My only concern is that those guides seem to say that "traffic shaping" (as I believe its called) just slows down bittorrent connections, it doesnt actually block them.

The guy who's comp it is, he rang TalkTalk (his ISP) and TalkTalk say that each customer is allowed 40GB a month, only after that will talktalk start throttling your connection. And even then, talktalk said they'd send a letter first. Maybe the blocked ports are a result of some hardware failure in the modem? When I go round i'll take a spare netgear ADSL router and see how that fares.

BTW, spent another £350 @ Scan today. :^) Queue collect is brilliant.
