    Frequent 'disconnection' problem

Past month or so I've been having issues with my virgin 20mb broadband, whenever I start to use the internet for the first time in awhile (say afew hours) it will disconnect/reset after afew minutes and the 'ready' light on the modem will flash for ~30s then come back online, then a minute or two later it will do the same thing again. After that it generally works fine for a couple of hours then will disconnect/reset again same as before. According to virgin there aren't any issues in my area (NG16).

If anyone can shed any light would be great cause it's seriously annoying now after a month.

VirginMedia E08C007 modem into a linksys WRT54GS V7 and don't know if it's connected but the problem started happening around the time I upgraded to windows 7.

    Re: Frequent 'disconnection' problem

I had the exact same issue for ages also, phoned Virgin loads and kept getting told that there was no issue and to replace my hardware/ test other hardware. Connected modem directly to the PC, same was still happening.

They even tried to charge £70 for a route.

Eventually, when threatening to leave, they sent an engineer out who tested the line and found we were basically too much signal so to speak from where. They provided an explanation that the boxes are configured to send the best possible signal out so those houses furthest away get a decent signal. However this meant that those closest get over loaded which causes the modem to drop connection. We had a filter added to the line which seems to have fixed the problem, however now I just get a random connection problem at about midnight, ever night.

Also, make sure your drivers are installed correctly on the PC and make sure there are no issues with anything.

Phone up and complain, hell threaten to leave.

go to http://192.168.100.1/ if it asks for a login it,s usually root:root I think and check the signal page, downstream power should be between +/-10ish dBmV, the closer to 0 the better and upstream power should be below 50. Also downstream SNR should be above 30dB IIRC.

So if any of that info is useful for you to see what problem is then fire away! Already planning to get them to send a engineer out for a new modem etc, just wanted some solid data to hammer them with this time before the usual "we'll look into it" crap.

    Re: Frequent 'disconnection' problem

Upstream power looks a little high but it shouldn't be high enough to cause problems, everything else looks normal to me.
