ADSL routers not syncing on my line

    Hi,

I'm having problems with ADSL routers - basically my old D-link G604T router worked flawlessly for 4 years and then one day stopped syncing. I bought a TP-link TD-W8960N but it wouldn't sync either. Both routers seem to work OK on other lines though on my line they give a "broadband connection not present error".

I dug out an old D-link DSL200 ADSL USB modem from 2002 and it worked! So that's what I'm using now. I reported this to my ISP Zen (I'm on a legacy 2Mb fixed non-LLU connection) and BT sent someone out. He fitted a new socket and declared that there was no problem because his USB-based equipment worked ok but still no sync with my router.

Zen have advised me to try other routers because of potential chipset incompatabilites - they recommended a £140 Draytek Vigor which is a bit rich for me.

Anyway - has anyone experienced this sort of problem - thanks for bearing with me!

Checked all your filters? - Isolated the master socket and tested from there as it could be an internal wiring issue.

Surprises me they recommended a Draytek to test with - last time I heard (from our Zen acc manager) they were avoiding recommending this and telling people to use Thomson kit!
You could try getting a cheap old Draytek 2600 off ebay. They sell for pennies, but are as rock solid as the newer 2820's

    Thanks for replying.

The BT guy fitted a new socket because the old one was over 20 yrs old. I've tried it in the master socket (i.e. with faceplate off). Im interested in your use of the word "isolate". There is an extension in the house - is there anyway to isolate that from the master socket that you know of?

Thanks for mentioning ebay - I'd never thought of them for a cheap router.

Re: ADSL routers not syncing on my line

removing the faceplate from the master socket esposes the "test socket" and in turn isolates it from all the other extensions in the house. you can then plug your filter and ADSL router into this to see if you can achieve a sync. It will tho' cut off your extension till you replace the faceplate.

Ebay is the place to go.
Depressingly I sold a 2600 plus on there not that long ago. It sold for just over a fiver!

Thanks, I might try a 2600 but I'm not holding out much hope. I might migrate to a provider who provides a router but at my exchange only Tiscali is LLU and you can't sign up with them anymore (I think!)

P.S. how can i "thank you" for your advice?

Tiscali was absorbed by TalkTalk, I think TalkTalk is using the Tiscali infrastructure and moving its TalkTalk customers onto it.

Unfortunately it looks like Talk Talk are dragging their heels over exchanges where Tiscali was LLU but not Talk Talk. Whenever I try some details (not mine because I don't want to be called by them) it says that only BT based packages are available.

    Sad but true.

Re: ADSL routers not syncing on my line

Zen shouldnt have suggested a draytek router, Can you remember who you spoke to?

ATM we use speedtouch routers and thats what usuall is suggested.

If your far from the exchange then sometimes drayteks work really well with the long line firmware but if you are on 2 meg then that shouldnt bet the case.

if you are not getting sync its almost always an exchnage issue. Make sure they have not removed ADSL from your line.

Re: ADSL routers not syncing on my line

Its possible an exchange issue but its unlikely we would have sent an engineer out to the premises if the problem was at the exchange

true, but I have seen this before. ADSL was removed from the line but the database was not updated, engineer turns up, line tests fine. In the end we had to do a reprovision.

Re: ADSL routers not syncing on my line

    Hi guys,

Thanks for replying. I'm about 2 minutes walk from the exchange.

I can get sync with an old usb adsl router but not (so far) with a router. I can live with this but it's not ideal.

The first fault ref I raised was 75611 for info.

    Any ideas appreciated!

Re: ADSL routers not syncing on my line

I used to love problems like that jay

All started when Offcom decided bt where too powerful so bt split up.

One company dealing with the DSL the other company dealing with the coppey and neither company allowed to speak to each other they where called 2012 fault and there was a specialist team at bt who where allowed to access both systems to ensure they matched.

Re: ADSL routers not syncing on my line

    Wessie,

Just been looking over your fault history. It looks like it syncs fine with a usb modem but not with a new router you have bought which works on a neighbours line?

Cant see any mention on the notes but is the neighbour on a BT line or do they get their BB from someone else eg Talktalk, sky?

Re: ADSL routers not syncing on my line

Thanks for the help so far!

There isn't a lot of LLU choice here -so they're on BT based connections

I`ll have a word with Leo who was dealing with the last fault. Will see what he was doing with it.
