    Broadband - 2 Months Only?

    Hey everyone,

I'm moving into a flat in a week, until early September. This flat doesn't have a land-line, so I'll have to pay for a connection, too, I assume from BT.

Can anyone recommend an internet service that I can use for only those 2 months, and which I can disconnect after for free? Many of these contracts seem to lock you in for 12 months, or have a very high disconnection cost.

As an aside, I'd prefer this internet connection to be 'unlimited', at least in off-peak hours, and fair at other times (so no 2gb/month cap, etc).

    Any recommendations would be appreciated,

    Thanks!

I would look into 3G broadband instead. It's a 12month contract with a BT landlane, even before you get broadband on top.

I took a look at that, but unfortunately we're talking £25/7gb, and I suspect over 2 months it would work out more expensive than paying for some sort of fixed line service.

Re: Broadband - 2 Months Only?

But you will be £128 to get a line "installed", plus line rental at a minimum of £11.54 with a 12 month contract, plus broadband on top of that.

So for the line alone you are going to work out at £133.24 a month before you even talk about internet.

Yikes, I had no idea they still charged that large a fee for (re)connection.

Would I be right to guess that you can't have a broadband connection without a telephone line-rental?

Zen internet - 1 month minimum contract, but they charge £47 activation.

    http://www.zen.co.uk/Broadband/athome.aspx

And yes if there's no line into the flat they will charge £128 for putting one in. If there's a line in but it's been disconnected, it may be significantly less.

Re: Broadband - 2 Months Only?

Correct, no ADSL without a phone line.

I was £128 for a re-connection when I moved into my current place, although they might have been on TalkTalk before, so BT may see that as a move to them even though it wasn't me doing the moving.

Think we had another thread recently about the same issue?

I'd second the suggestion of getting a dongle if you cant - or perhaps looking into FON access?

    (www.btfon.com - if I remember correctly)

Re: Broadband - 2 Months Only?

I checked the BT Fon website, but it's not particularly clear on subscriptions. If I'm in the vicinity of one of the BT Fon outlets, do I only need to buy the router (which is about £25), or do I need to pay a subscription too?

You still have the cost of the line over and above that.

Re: Broadband - 2 Months Only?

I had a chat with the building's manager and apparently there's a connection box downstairs for all the apartments. I think it's a standard BT one, and there are phone line connections in the apartment itself, just no line rental.

From your experience: Do BT tend to charge the full £120+ fee just to start renting a line, even if all the 'hardware' is in place, so to speak?

Or search for an unprotected connection and rob that for 2 months

    Yes I believe so.

The reason for this is it would actually cost them many tiems more to install that actual physical line if there wasn't already, but would only be able to charge you £128 (unless you are in the middle of nowhere when they can charge you thousands). So basically you with all the hardware in place would be subsidising those new connections that needs a lot of work. Not fiar for you, but generally fairer over all.

Also, it's not that they just need to flick a switch or change a seting on a computer necesarily. They may need to do work at the cabinet at the end of the road to connect you, or work at the exchange where your copper pair reaches the equipment, so the fee is justified.

Yes they do unless you are taking a long term deal, or pricey call package I'm afraid. As others have mentioned, it might be worth looking for legal sharing with someone else in the building or even next door perhaps?
