Streaming HD Video in a duplex apartment?

    Hello all

Moving into a Duplex apartment at the end of the month and I need to be able to stream HD video from my desktop PC to a Popcorn Hour and a WDTV Media Streamer.

I was just wondering what the best way would be of doing this?

Can 11n support full on streaming of 1080p video with HD Audio? Or should I get 200mbps Homeplugs?

What brand of Homeplugs are good?

    Thanks

i use homeplugs myself, though i don't normally steam HD video through them and i've only got 85mbs ones. i managed to stream 720p mkv files via B/G wireless to my netbook that played fine, so maybe N will work, but i think a hardwired signal would be more reliable. it might also depend on how many things you have connected to the powerline as i have tons so i think that reduces my homeplug speed a bit

    Thanks,

It's a rented place so I'm not sure if I can run cables everywhere without it looking a mess, that would be my preferred option though, if no I'll look at the Homeplugs, thanks!

No chance of wireless n working to be honest. You'll be lucky to get homeplugs working as well.

When it comes to 1080p, ethernet is the only approach that works solidly.

Devolo dLAN 200 homeplugs are the best out there but no even close of working properly with 1080p.

    Wireless is useless.

Back to basics - ethernet is the only way without stuttering...

I have, and am using, Linksys (by Cisco!) homeplugs to stream 1080p mkv from a DS209j to a Popcorn C-200.

The master homeplug is on a direct wall socket off the back of my Linksys router, the other is on a Belkin A/V surge protector and serves both the C-200 and a 360.

    No stuttering whatsoever.

How much effort would it be to run network cable around a rented apartment? Would it push underneath the carpets?

I've got a couple that run along the walls of the room, they quite happily push under the skirting board.

If you want to push it under carpet, get some flat Cat5.

Re: Streaming HD Video in a duplex apartment?

    This would be my setup:

Front Room - Popcorn Hour A-110 Media Streamer / Xbox 360
Spare Room - PC serving media files to the Popcorn Hour
Main Bedroom - WDTV Media Streamer

So I'd have to run cable from the front room to both bedrooms up a flight of stairs, that's quite a long run of cable!

so why not run one long cable to upstairs to a switch. This can then be central to the other runs of cable?

Re: Streaming HD Video in a duplex apartment?

Good idea, but then where would I put the switch? I presume if I want a truly 'invisible' setup I'd probably have to stick with two runs, or hide a switch in a cupboard somewhere?

If you can't get the services you want where you live, is moving an option?
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

Re: Streaming HD Video in a duplex apartment?

Unfortunately we've just put the deposit down and gone through the credit checks (Not signed the tenancy yet!)

Naively I thought that because there was a Sky dish outside then we would be able to receive Sky, but apparently the dish isn't allowed, and I didn't even think to check the local exchange was LLU.

It's not a *massive* issue, I'm looking at ISP's that have a tariff where night usage doesn't count towards your allowance, and we can always use freeview, it's just a bit of a pain!

I've spoken to Virgin Media and they're getting involved with looking at cabling the area, seeing as though there's 200 houses that can't get Sky or fast internet they may be looking at quite a big potential install base.
