O2 or Be. Personally, I would go with Be*. Mainly because you can enable FastPath, and get a nice low ping (I always have the lowest/best ping on any server I join).

Virgin can be good depending on where you live, in some areas it's over-subscribed so not great but I nearly always get the advertised speed, have a consistently low ping and frequently get picked as host on Xbox Live. If you can, ask other people in the area about the quality of various packages but being so close to the exchange you'll probably get more for your money with a decent LLU ADSL provider.

I wouldn't go for virgin unless it's the 50Mb, as you don't know if you'll be in an oversubscribed area or not for 10/20Mb. Be/o2 are good.

Re: 6 gaming guys in a house

Speed is of little importance for gaming, and if it's oversubscribed you'll have problems whether you're on the 2Mb/s or 200Mb/s package which is why I said it would be wise to check first. Actually check to see if BT Infinity is available in your area, it likely isn't but if it is it offers exceptional value for money and like VM it's FTTC so you should get the advertised speed regardless of distance to the exchange.

I been with Virgin for over a yr now on 50mbit. other than initial teething problems, its ran perfectly.. Virgins latency has never given me cause for concern

Re: 6 gaming guys in a house

Been very impressed with Virgin, but then, I live in a city and am about half a mile from the exchange. Assuming the server at the far end is up to it, I often reach my advertised limit of 20 Mbit/s. Ping is good too. Upload bandwidth could be a touch more generous, but it's certainly not bad.

Yeah O2 woudl get my vote. I have been with them a good few months and the service is great. Very very few outages or line problems (if any actually), ping is very low and speeds are good.

Re: 6 gaming guys in a house

Anyone feel sorry for the 7th Guy/Girl?
Don't get me wrong, I like gaming as much as the next guy, but there's so many opportunities to try new things at university it'll be rude not to.

    On topic now,

I've gamed on Virgin, it was fine, if you wanted to go with ADSL I would recommend Zen (there network and support is fantastic), that said with 6 heavy gamers and most likely downloaders, you'd eat through the download cap in no time.

Re: 6 gaming guys in a house

most games use no more than 10kbs, so, as been mentioned its not the headline speed, but the latency of the connection, and which is often made worse by how contented it is.

Also am I the only one who thought this was going to be a thread of failed TV comedy pilot titles.
