    Cable testers and crimp tools

    Hi guys,

Does anyone have any idea about a decent network cable tester, and a decent RJ45 crimp tool?
im not looking to spend loads of money, but i do want a durable crimper.
with regards to the cable tester - i just want to make sure the cable is terminated correctly, in the right order, and works ok

ps if they come in a set, with a carry case - even better

    thanks

one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ethernet-Netwo...item3a5c82e855 will do the job - will test for opens/shorts/order. I've used of these for a few years with no problem. As for a crimper you takes your chance and takes your choice - RS components do good ones but they aren't cheap.

for rj45 pinouts there are loads of guides on the web. the one i used to dish out at work is this one

    http://www.peakelec.co.uk/downloads/ethernet.pdf

avoid the really cheap strip/crimpers as i've found the stripper is useless and the crimper wasn't exerting enough pressure to force the crimps in the the cores properly.

mind you just looking on scan these don't look to bad for the price http://www.scan.co.uk/products/Newli...nal-Quality%29

if your confident enough, then just use a stanley to strip the sheathing - i don't use anything else (crimper aside). we started making our own leads at work for hmi/plc/modem connections and it saved us a fortune over the pre-made patch leads.

Do you use stranded cable for your patch leads or are you just using the solid core cable that everybody usually uses?

most of it was single core - easier to thread into the plug, although not so great if the core breaks. although not long before i left we had some stranded. i mean for what we were using it for, standard cat5 was fine.
